1920 takes
place in the pre-independence era and
revolves around Arjun and Lisa who are newlyweds.
Arjun works as an architect and has been hired to
build a hotel where an old mansion is currently
placed. To prepare for the reconstruction, the young
couple moves into the mansion, but Lisa quickly
realizes that something's wrong. The spirits in the
house don't seem to want them to demolish the old
building, but what can they do to prevent it?

After barely having recovered from the atrocious
Indian horror flick "Phoonk", I wasn't sure that
I was ready to go into another exorcism-themed
horror flick by another renowned Indian director.
1920 has apparently been the most hyped Bollywood
horror flick of the year but received some awful
reviews from most Indian movie critics. However,
this movie critic (if I can call myself that) has
to disagree. 1920 is actually a pretty well-crafted
horror flick and even if the exorcism thing is
getting old, they actually managed to twist the
story enough to make it feel somewhat original (hey,
I said somewhat).
The movie takes place in 1920 when India was still
British and revolves around a young couple, Arjun
and Lisa, who have had to fight for their love.
One day, Arjun gets the assignment of his dreams,
he's been asked to design a luxurious hotel at a
location where an old building (which is due to be
demolished) is currently standing. They move into
the big mansion to prepare for the demolition but
Lisa can instantly feel that there's something not
right with the old building. From here on out it's
a classic tale of exorcism but with some very cool
special effects, some great acting (seriously,
top-notch acting) and some beautiful cinematography.
In 1920 it's all about the entertainment. Two hours
may seem like a stretch for an exorcism-themed
horror flick but those two hours just flew by.
It's certainly a very fast-paced horror movie and
still it remains atmospheric and even manages to
become fairly suspenseful at times. There are a
few flaws to be found in here though but to tell
you the truth, I've written negative reviews all
day long so I'm not even going to go into those
with this one as the problems that this movie has
are basically the same that most Indian horror
movies have. For a Bollywood horror flick, 1920
is very solid and will certainly keep you entertained,
at least moderately so.
This movie won't go down in history and it's not
very memorable either to tell you the truth but
if you're looking for a mildly amusing horror flick
which will kill two hours of your life, you could
do a whole lot worse. I'm not saying that I recommend
it because I'm not, I'm just saying that it's a
whole lot better than I had expected it to be and
deserves more credit than it's gotten.

Not much here.

The music was okay, did what it was intended to do.

Surprisingly decent take on the exorcism-concept.
It won't win any awards for originality but it still
felt somewhat refreshing - perhaps I'm just saying
that since I just recently sat through the atrocious
movie Phoonk with a very similar concept, either way
I had a pretty good time so it may be worth checking
out if you have nothing else to watch.
