A couple of students are going to Daytona beach
for spring break when they stumble onto a friendly
little town celebrating an annual festival. They
decide to stay since there are hot, slutty girls
and lots of free food to stick around for, what
they don't know is that the small town is hiding
a very dark secret...

When a horror remake goes directly to DVD, maybe
it wasn't such a good movie to remake in the
first place? Now, while I haven't seen the original
movie that this was based on, I can certainly
say that I have no intention of doing so after
having seen this since the story is incredibly
ludicrous and clichéd. I'm sure the original is
better but seriously, the story is quite absent
and basically just revolve around a group of
clueless teens who get killed one by one. Yeah,
I guess this actually is a slasher movie even if
there are 2001 killers instead of 1-5.

The acting is the best thing about the movie
because even if I found it close to impossible
to root for any of the characters, they still
did the best with what they had. That goes for
everyone except for Englund who felt tired and
old in this movie, he didn't seem very interested
in his part at all. The movie looks surprisingly
high budget as well with nice photography and
decent directing, which leads me to wonder who
actually invested in making this movie.

Overall, 2001 Maniacs failed to impress me. It's
definitely a strange film but not necessarily
in a good way. It's got a couple of relatively
good laughs in it and there is enough gore in it
to keep horror fans interested. However, the
special effects look incredibly cheap and even
though the movie looks like it was high budget
production-wise, it lacks in other departments.
Luckily this didn't get a theatrical release so
I truly hope that there won't be a 2002 Maniacs.

The gore effects are effective but cheap. We get
a head smashed open, severed limbs, guts,
decapitated heads an all right impalement and
some more. Good enough.

Hillbilly redneck music of course with a lot of
guitars and country singers. Suitable but terribly
annoying - which even one of the characters notices.

2001 Maniacs is basically an oddball slasher
flick with a whole town of crazy killers and
while that might sound good, it sounds a whole
lot more interesting than it actually is. With
a ludicrous and clichéd plot, I seriously doubt
that this will manage to impress anyone.
