A small Alaskan
town is more or less deserted for 30
days as there is no daylight to be seen for this period
of time. Only a few people stay behind to make sure
that everything stays in order. Unfortunately for them,
a bunch of hungry vampires have just come up with a
brilliant idea...

In these day in age, I'm thinking that the vampire
subgenre is probably the most difficult subgenre in
horror to succeed at. We've seen numerous failed
attempts over the past couple of years and I'm actually
surprised to say that 30 Days Of Night is quite a good
flick. It's actually the best vampire flick that I've
seen in several years. However, I don't feel that it
deserves all the hype that it has gotten as it's quite
mediocre overall as a horror flick and the only reason
that I'm giving it some extra credit is because it
managed to do something which I thought was impossible;
it managed to breath fresh air into the vampire genre.
Last year, a Swedish horror flick was released called
Frostbite. Despite a wide release and maximum advertising,
the movie never even managed to break into the Swedish
top 20 box office chart. The reason that I'm telling
you this is because the two movies have a whole lot in
common, only 30 Days Of Night is more professional and
doesn't have the childish humour in it. And of course
there's the budget as well. Anyway, the story revolves
around Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) and his ex-girlfriend
Stella Oleson (Melissa George) who get stuck in a small
Alaskan town during the dark period when no planes or
vehicles go to the town. A couple of other people have
also decided to stay in their homes despite the fact
that it'll be pitch black outside for thirty days.
Sounds cosy enough right? Well a couple of vampires have
come up with a plan to have a great feast for thirty
days in the small town since they won't have to hide
when the sun comes out.
I really do enjoy the concept but the execution could
probably have been a whole lot better. The movie is
somewhat hard to follow, there are too many supporting
characters that are only there to get killed off and
I really don't like Josh Hartnett for whatever reason
(I'm probably just jealous). I don't think that 30
Days Of Night will find a place in my DVD shelf when
it hits the stores since I'm not a fan of the subgenre,
but for a vampire flick, this was surprisingly good.
Don't expect a Dracula like flick though, these vampires
are anything but romantic, nor do they sleep in coffins.
These vampires are angry, vicious, and will walk over
bodies to find some grub.

A couple of slashed throats, an axe in the head, a
severed hand, a decapitation and some more.

Did what it was intended to do but not a whole lot more.

30 Days Of Night is the best vampire flick to come out
in years. A user on IMDb said "Very good film for its
genre", and that's exactly what it is, but as a horror
flick, it isn't quite as effective. If you're into
vampires, be sure to check this one out though.
