It's been
several months since a virus started to turn
people into flesh-eating mutants and a group of
survivors have found shelter inside a hospital. Now,
a rescue team has been sent out to find any remaining
survivors before the whole area is destroyed. Will
they be able to rescue the survivors before it's too late?

Against The Dark is the low-budget version of... well
any movie really that's about flesh-eating zombie-like
mutants. We've had quite a few of them recently and
while some of them are outstanding (28 Weeks Later),
some are less than impressive (Biohazardous). Against
The Dark is obviously very low-budget seeing as how
the entire movie takes place inside a hospital. It's
got some decent actors in it and the story is just
fine but there's not an ounce of originality in here.
This has been done so many times before and there's
nothing that makes this stand out except for perhaps
the fact that it's got Steven Seagal in it.
A group of survivors have found shelter inside a
seemingly abandoned hospital but soon come to realize
that it's not so abandoned after all. In fact, there
are infected people to be found on each floor so now
they have to find a way out. Luckily for them,
a rescue team has been sent out to save them, but will
they be able to do so? It doesn't exactly scream
originality does it? But I have to be honest with you,
Against The Dark isn't half-bad. It's got everything
a DTV zombie/mutant horror flick needs and then some.
It's pretty amusing seeing Toa from Samoa from American
Gladiators jump around with two big blades slashing
mutants' throats. Steven Seagal is a little stiff
with his swords though and stands in the background
for most of the time.
The acting is surprisingly good from all of the cast
members and the movie looks relatively good but
I refuse to believe that this movie was more expensive
than The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. According
to IMDb this movie cost 9 million dollars and I would
have guessed maybe around 2 million dollars tops.
It's funny how people seem to be lying a lot about
the production budget of their movies as of recently
as this is the third movie I watch in a row where
I make a comment on how off the reported budget seems
to be. Anyway, those looking for a kick-ass martial
arts / action / horror movie may be disappointed but
I thought that it was all good fun. Against The Dark
is not very memorable and this is going up on Ebay
tomorrow for me but it's still pretty decent.

We get arms chopped off, intestines, blood splatter,
slashed throats, gory bitings and more.

Fairly good rock music along with an okay suspense score.

Against The Dark is a decent 28 Days Later/Blade clone
aimed at the DTV market. It won't win any awards and
won't become anyone's favourite horror flick but it's
entertaining enough to keep you interested but I bet
you won't remember it when the year is over.
