It's Halloween night and a bunch of friends decide to call
up a local radio station and confess their biggest fears
on the air. Big mistake! Someone has listened to what they
had to say and has decided to make their fears reality. As
the Halloween party gets going, the friends are slowely
slaughtered one by one, will anyone survive this nightmare
or will they all have an encounter with their worst fear?

Debbie Rochon, Brinke Stevens and Brandy Little all together
in a slasher flick. Could this really be good? Nope, not
really. American Nightmare is Jon Keeyes directorial debut
and while it does have some potential, it drags on for
too long and never becomes very scary or entertaining. The
story revolves around a couple of friends who get offed one
by one by a psychotic chick (Debbie Rochon) and the story
is obviously inspired by the 1995 slasher flick "The Fear"
and I have to say that even if I gave these two movies the
same rating, I still find this a bit better. The characters
aren't stereotypes and all of them are pretty likeable.

The most surprising thing about this movie is the acting,
I don't know if Jon Keeyes is some kind of super director
but Debbie Rochon and Brinke Stevens, two scream queens
that I normally bitch about in my reviews because they're
so bad, give us excellent, yes you heard me right, EXCELLENT
performances. Debbie is sexier than ever in this flick and
you could really tell that she was going into this project
full heartedly as she is the best thing about this movie.
Another thing I really liked about this movie was that even
if it had an incredibly limited budget, this looks really
good. The photography is very good (even if it lacks a bit
in the colour department) and the movie actually looks
professional, I mean, it looks like any other DTV Scream
rip-off. It's easy to tell that a whole lot of time went
into making this movie.

Still, this is a very slow-moving movie and the ending kind
of bums you out. There's no real climax in the movie and
there's no real gore in the flick (this could be rated PG-13
really if it wasn't for the little nudity that we got).
I mean, this is a slasher flick (even if it's not your
ordinary one) and it should have at least some blood in
it, even a slit throat would have done. It does however
have a very memorable buried alive scene which haunted me
forever the first time I watched this flick. This isn't
a complete waste of time but it is pretty dull.

Nothing.

I guess the Texas rock music was pretty all right but this
soundtrack didn't appeal to me at all and I think I would
have done it differently myself.

American Nightmare is a mixed bag- the acting is good and
from some actors, even great, the movie looks high budget
even though it was shot with a very tight one and it does
have some cool and memorable scenes. But in the end this
flick is just way too slow and way too unoriginal to stay
interesting. Not a complete timewaster but I can't
recommend this.
