Documentary film maker Grace Lee has decided to show
the world what zombies are really like. She follows
a couple of zombies around in Los Angeles and lets them
tell her about their lives. Are zombies really as
violent and evil as we think that they are or have
they just gotten a bad reputation based on the fact
that they're living dead?

2007 and 2008 sure have been the years for mockumentary-
style zombie flicks a la REC, The Zombie Diaries,
Diary Of The Dead and so on. Now it's time for American
Zombie to throw itself out there. Does it succeed?
Well let's just say that it's the least entertaining
one out of the four. While the three previously
mentioned horror titles had a lot of action in them,
American Zombie takes a more subtle approach as we
learn about the everyday life of a zombie. Make no
mistake about it, American Zombie is a pretty clever
and well-made film, it just has some serious pacing
issues that are difficult to overcome.

Grace Lee is a renowned documentary film maker who's
just decided to shoot a documentary about zombies. See,
lately a virus has been spreading in Los Angeles, turning
people who were violently killed into zombies. Not the
flesh eating creatures that we know though, no just
regular people only that they are dead and walking.
The point is, it's about as exciting as it sounds and
all they did was basically just change gay people with
zombies. Yeah you heard me, American Zombie is basically
a movie about the gay community only that the gays have
been replaced with the living dead, what a flattering
comparison wouldn't you say? Anyhow, due to some decent
acting and a solid script, the movie manages to stay
relatively interesting through and through anyway but
it goes exactly where you expect it to go and it doesn't
really offer anything new to the plate, even though it
badly wants to do so.

While all the other mockumentary zombie flicks that
we've seen recently have looked rather high budget,
even though they're filmed with a handheld camera just
like this, American Zombie comes off as the one with
the lowest production values. The picture is blurry,
the cinematography doesn't exist, the light sources
are always natural. Of course this adds to the feel
of the movie but it also distracts the viewer from the
story which really is the strong side here. Still,
even though this movie has a tight script and a fairly
interesting storyline, it's still only so so and I'm
sure not everyone will enjoy this as much as I did.
Worth a watch if you were a fan of the other mockumentary
zombie flicks that have been released recently.

Not a lot to say here.

Again, not a lot to say here.

American Zombie is a decent mockumentary and probably
the most convincing one when it comes to the zombie
concept. Still, it has a tendency to drag and has some
serious pacing problems. Definitely not for people
with short attention spans.
