A couple of
years ago a man killed his entire family in their
house in Amityville. Now, a new family has moved into that
house thinking this is the beginning of a wonderful new life.
What they don't know is that they're dead wrong. Something
evil is possessing the house and when weird things start
happening, the family realizes that moving in might not have
been such a great idea after all.

It's always interesting to see modern takes on classic horror
movies, some appreciate them, some don't. I'm pretty neutral,
I simply think of a remake as a sequel as that's really what
they are. Look at the Amityville series for example, eight
movies have been made about a possessed house in Amityville
and not one of them dares to be original, so basically all
of them felt like cheap remakes. This is also the case with
this new take on the Amityville story, it adds absolutely
nothing new to the story. Once again it's all about how a
house drives a family man mad. Suffice to say I didn't feel
like this was necessary, it basically just felt like a movie
made solely with the purpose to make money. At least Dawn Of
The Dead and Texas Chainsaw added new twists and subplots to
the story but there's just nothing creative about this movie.
As we all know, just because a movie is a classic, doesn't
necessarily mean that it's a good movie. This is the case with
Amityville Horror, I did not think that the original movie was
anything special at all, many probably want to argue this but
when you remake something that according to me wasn't very
good
in the first place and then don't change the script in the
least, you can only fail to deliver a good movie. Seriously,
it wouldn't surprise me if they actually used the exact same
script that the original had. The only new touches that the
movie has are scenes ripped off from other new successful
horror flicks, just to give it that mainstream kick that we've
all learned to love and appreciate (yeah I am being sarcastic).
With that being said I don't think that I have to tell you
that I couldn't help feeling as if this was only made for the
mainstream audience without any respect for horror fans at all.
The acting is averagely good but when Melissa George tries to
look as if she believes all the mumbojumbo that she reads in
old newspaper clippings, we can't do anything else but laugh.
Both Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George fails in convincing us
in the big picture and we have a hard time rooting for anyone
even though they desperately try to wake some kind of feelings
by throwing in "disturbing" scenes every once in a while. Now,
this review has a very negative tone for such a good rating
and I realize that but I just think that it's important to
bring up this movies flaws as they stand out more than the
things that the movie actually has going for it. The movie is
not complete garbage, it's not worse than the original movie,
nor is it better, it's simply the exact same movie, only with
more flashy CGI effects. We do get a couple of scares, we do
get some gore but if you've seen the original I see absolutely
no reason in watching this unless you feel like watching the
original yet another time.

A lot of blood splatter, some hooks in ones body, some gory
shotgun scenes and not a whole lot more than that. I was told
that this movie was going to be extremely gory so I'm guessing
they cut a lot out to receive an R-rating.

Pretty much the same soundtrack used in the original with a
few touches of the soundtrack from The Ring. Not really
impressive but creates a good atmosphere.

I was hoping that this would be better than the original movie
as the trailer got me all excited, unfortunately it was
basically just the original movie all over again with more
special effects and less character development. If you've seen
the original, you don't need to see this, if you have not seen
the original, this is a relatively good horror flick with a
couple of scares and a little gore, perfect for the mainstream
audience who just loves movies like White Noise and Boogeyman.
