A small family
has just grown as a new baby has
just been born. This is usually a very joyeous
moment for all parents but for the mother of the
family, it's anything but as she's suffering from
postpartum depression. One night when she finds
matches from a strip club in her husbands pants,
her whole world crumbles and she finally snaps.
Now her oldest son, Jimmy, has to do everything
he can to make sure that his siblings survive
this night of terror.

You know, I had a discussion with a friend of
mine today as we sat through Film Horor and Side
Sho together and I told him that I can usually
make out what my rating for the film will be
within the first five minutes. I had pegged this
as a 2'er tops judging from the first five minutes
but as I let the movie move on another five
minutes or so I said to him "wait... this could
actually be a winner" to which he replied "how
so?" and I answered "because you can all ready
tell that there was a lot of effort put into this
production, just look at how beautiful the
cinematography and colour scheme is, despite its
low budget". Well, I guess I was right. Baby Blues
is indeed a surprise winner.
Based on a true story (the best movies always are),
Baby Blues tells the tale of a mother gone insane.
I had no idea what to expect going into this,
I didn't even know what it was about but guess
what? It's about a mother killing her own children
one by one in the most sadistic ways. Now if
that didn't catch your attention, I don't know
what will. This is not a troma-like production
either, it's beautifully shot with magnificent
cinematography and three surprisingly good
child actors. The on-screen connection between
the characters really feels genuine which makes
it all so much creepier. This is the kind of movie
where you find yourself grabbing onto the couch
in pure suspense.
Naturally not all is brilliant either. I found
the beginning a tad slow and I do wish that we
had learnt more about the characters, especially
the mother, before the mayhem started happening.
Either way, Baby Blues is a top-notch horror film.
It's genuinely creepy, it's dark and it's the
perfect film for a dark, rainy night. I'm actually
surprised that After Dark didn't pick this up
for their next 8 Films To Die For. Well, I'm not
going to ramble on and on either, just make sure
to check this one out as Baby Blues is a horror
film I strongly recommend.

Stabbings, slashings, some minor gore. It's not
about the gore though, it's about the atmosphere.

Very subtle, did what it was intended to do even
if it could've been stronger.

A powerful and terrifying horror film with a great
concept (I can't believe this didn't go theatrical)
and some surprisingly good actors. I'm certainly
very impressed with this indie feature and it's
going up there as one of the best horror films of
the year for sure. Not to be missed.
