An amateur rock band is recording their first music video
at the same studio where The Lost World was shot, among
many other famous movies. Well, it turns out that even
though the band has gotten a great director for their
video, the music video is turning out to be a complete
disaster. And when a killer in an Elvis mask shows up and
starts offing the band and crew members one by one, things
aren't exactly looking good.

The Back Lot Murders has got to be one of the funniest
slasher comedies out there, in fact, I can think of only
one slasher comedy which is more fun and that's Psycho
Beach Party. The Back Lot Murders follows the rules of
all slasher flicks - masked killer, screaming big breasted
girls and some dumb bimbo screaming her lungs out -
and just adds a little comedy to it all rather than to
ridicule the slasher genre like Scary Movie did.

The story is actually quite clever with a rock band getting
killed off during the recording of a music video, by a
killer in an Elvis Presley mask. I mean, sure it wouldn't
take a genius to make the story up but it's never been
done before (Rocktober Blood doesn't come anywhere near
this flick). The movie is also highly entertaining even
though it's a pretty stupid one. It's predictable, it's
clichéd and it's everything that a DTV slasher flick
should be really. I do have to give it some credit for
having a very unpredictable ending though.

There are a couple of relatively well-known faces in
the cast as well with Priscilla Barnes playing a bitchy
manager. I have to say that I've never seen Priscilla
Barnes so good before, she gives it all here with a
very strong performance. The acting all in all is a
mixed bag however with some great performances and
some truly abysmal ones. But seeing as how you're not
supposed to take this flick seriously, it never really
bothers you that some of these actors have no previous
experience in front of a camera.

I have to say that I was impressed the first time I
saw this. This is the perfect flick for a rainy day.
Just cuddle up in your sofa and enjoy the cheesy
fun and treat yourself to a couple of laughs. This
one is definitely worth checking out even though it
might not be a masterpiece.

We get a couple of impalements including one which was
obviously inspired by the one in Friday the 13th. We
also get a very gory slit throat and an axe in the
stomach. Acceptable.

The theme melody is pretty bad with some weird bells
and the rock music is nothing to get worked up about
either but the suspense score works pretty well.

The Back Lot Murders is a very entertaining slasher comedy
which doesn't sink to the levels of movies like Scary
Movie and Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday The
13th (or whatever the hell that movie is called). It is
a pretty stupid one though but it's perfect for a rainy
day when you have nothing else to watch.
