"The perfect horror flick for a rainy night"

Ever since serial killer Jack Riley brutally slaughtered
Karen's family, she's been on a hunt. A hunt for
revenge. As a storm is headed for a small town,
Jack decides it's the perfect place to continue his
killing spree, unaware of the fact that Karen is
right on his heels.

It's not often that we get good-looking slasher
movies these days so when we do get them, I'm just
very appreciative. Basement Jack may be a low-budget
slasher flick but it's almost impossible to tell.
To me, this looked on par with After Dark's titles.
Of course there are a couple of things that aren't
so great but overall I was definitely pleasantly
surprised by this refreshing slasher movie. I mean,
it's just been way too long since we had an old-school
slasher flick set during a thunderstorm. It's got
a great atmosphere and it's a perfect horror flick to
watch on a rainy night.

The story isn't all that original of course but that's
not really important. It basically revolves around
Karen Cook, a girl whose family was brutally killed
by Jack Riley some time ago. Ever since then she's
been trying to hunt him down to take revenge. Michele
Morrow is a decent actress and the overall performances
from the cast is okay. I was sad to see Tiffany
Shepis in such a small role though as she's one of
my favourite scream queens. The directing is terrific
and along with the cinematography, this movie looks
like a million bucks. It's really a very high quality
slasher movie. However, like I said before, the movie
does have some issues.

First of all, I wasn't very fond of the killer. He
got better once he put on the mask towards the end
of the movie but he started off quite dull. Several
kills were also quite unconvincing. The story does
have some pacing problems as well and I wish that
they had focused more on making it a pure slasher
flick and not have so many cops involved in the
storyline (cops are rarely good for creating a
creepy atmosphere). That's about it for the issues
though. Other than that Basement Jack is a very
good slasher movie and you can tell that the guys
behind it really put a lot of effort into the project
which is always appreciated.

If you're looking for a well-directed and nice-looking
slasher movie with a lot of gore, a high body count
and a hot lead in it, Basement Jack is the movie
for you. It's the perfect horror flick for a rainy
night with several suspenseful moments in it and
some surprising kills. I actually hope that they
make a sequel to this as I think the set-up has a
lot of potential. Definitely worth checking out.

We get an impalement, a decapitated head, several
decapitations, an arm chopped off, guts, and more!

The score was OKAY. Nothing more, nothing less.

Highly entertaining slasher flick with some minor
issues. It is however rather forgettable unfortunately
but as far as mindless entertainment goes, Basement
Jack is a great timewaster filled with gore, action
and suspense. A slasher movie slasher fans can look
forward to renting on DVD.
