A group of
medical students break into a closed down
morgue where they find a body that hasn't decomposed
at all - even though the morgue has been closed for
quite some time. Shortly thereafter, the friends start
to have ghostly visions and it doesn't take long before
they start to turn up dead, one by one. What could the
spirit of the dead woman in the morgue want? Is there
any way to stop her before it's too late?

This is Indonesian horror movies for dummies people.
The movie starts with a short introduction of the flat
characters that are soon to be dead and quickly moves
onto a "scary" scene - naturally accompanied by loud
sound effects. The next scene is naturally in a night
club (do they use the same night club and DJ for all
Indonesian horror movies?? It sure seems like it) where
the friends are chilling and talking about nothing.
Then it takes about five minutes before the friends
start to see the long-haired ghost woman. From here on
out, there's hardly any plot to be found. All we get
are bad scare scenes, nightmares, nightmares within
nightmares, ghostly visions, and a group of wannabe
actors that can't act even if their lives
depended on it.
For those of you who have been following the Indonesian
horror scene for the last couple of years, you probably
all ready know that anything produced by MD Entertainment
will be generic and mediocre and that's just what
Beranak Dalam Kubur is. It's ridiculously plain, with
a rushed script and a forgettable premise. In a
desperate attempt to spice things up a little they've
thrown in some cheap fake blood (blood is usually an
absent factor in Indo horror flicks) and a girl in a
bath tub (very daring for an Indo movie). This might
work for the Indonesian movie goers but on an
international level, this won't impress anyone. I've
seen cartoons more provocative than this. Still, like
with most of MD Entertainment's films, the movie looks
technically better than most independent horror movies
produced in Indonesia. It almost looks up-to-par with
Thai horror flicks - production wise. Nice special
effects (no cheap Terowongan Casablanca edits here),
decent cinematography and okay directing.
The movie also has a solid pace through and through,
mainly due to the fact that the ghost has more on-screen
time than any of the other actors. She's almost in
every frame - talk about ignoring subtle suspense.
But you know, it is what it is; a rushed horror flick
with only one purpose - to make money. I don't think
that the companies in Indonesia understand that they're
killing the Indo horror wave with all these campy and
generic horror movies. Sooner or later people will get
sick of paying lots of money to see all these lame
productions. Every once in a while we get something
spectacular out of this country but for most of the time
we have to sit through rubbish like this. Beranak Dalam
Kubur isn't awful, but it certainly isn't worth
checking out. If you happen to have a copy of it on
DVD or VCD, you may want to watch it just to see how
far they've come when it comes to production values
in the Indonesian movie industry.

Not much here.

They've tried to create atmosphere and suspense with
some decent piano music and some dramatic music violin
music but it just doesn't work.

Genre: HORROR? I'm not sure about that people. Sure,
it's meant to scare people but I doubt that this will
give anyone nightmares. It's not the worst movie ever
and it is watchable due to its solid pace but man they
just don't get any more generic than this. Don't bother.
