If you are to believe the rumours, a psychotic woman
with a mouth slit open killed children in the
neighbourhood several years ago. But until today, it's
been nothing more than hearsay. Soon enough, children
start vanishing without a trace, and it seems as if
the slit-mouthed woman has returned to kill them all.
It's now up to two teachers to stop the mad woman
before there's no one left to tutor.

Perhaps more commonly known as "A Slit-Mouthed Woman",
Carved is one of the movies that I've been most
excited about seeing this year. Unfortunately it
didn't even come near my expectations. Carved is yet
another dull ghost story with a basic plot, little
gore and surprisingly enough - not a single scare.
This time a ghost called the slit-mouthed woman goes
around on a killing spree targeting little kids.
And when I say little I don't mean teens, I mean
8-year olds. This to me just seemed wrong. Why would
they make a horror movie where kids are forced to
act like they're killing people brutally? It all just
seemed so bizarre. Why would parents let their kids
be part of a thing like this?

But enough of the ethical nonsense, due to the fact
that the victims were kids, there was little to no
gore to be found in this movie - something which I was
very disappointed about. I mean, both the American
and the Japanese titles make it sound like a gory fun
time - which it's not. It's so basic that you can't
even believe it. A dynamic duo of a man and a woman,
a crazy ghost who can transfer from body to body
whenever someone coughs, and a riddle that has to be
solved. Hmmm, where have I seen this before?

Another thing I was disappointed in was the look of
the movie. It seemed very cheap to me. Not the stuff
we're used to from Asian horror flicks. Hell, even
Indonesia are producing higher-quality horror flicks
than Japan these days. Am I the only one that's finding
that a bit odd? The acting is below average as well
and you couldn't really connect with any of the
characters since they were all so flat. This was overall
an uneventful and dull experience where nothing ever
happened. It's a great concept gone completely to waste.

A slit mouth, a decapitated head and some blood splatter.

Generic piano music.

Carved is a dull and uneventful horror flick without
any kind of atmosphere and not a single suspenseful
scene in it. I'm not surprised that it flopped
disastrously in Japan as this low-budget ghost flick
is far from as great as the trailers and posters made
it look. Don't bother people.
