A giant underground cave system has just been discovered
so a team heads in to explore. When their only exit breaks
in, they have to find another way out, if there is one
that is. And as if they haven't got enough problems all
ready, it seems as if the cave is inhabited by a bunch of
vicious monsters.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a brilliant, and I mean brilliant
horror flick called "The Descent", it was actually so great
that I gave it a top rating. The Cave turned out to be pretty
much the same movie as "The Descent" only a whole lot more
Hollywood and not at all as scary. There is absolutely no
suspense in the entire flick and the monsters look more like
aliens than cave creatures. The Cave basically takes "The
Descent", "Deep Blue Sea", "Alone In The Dark" and "Pitch
Black" and put their stories in a blender. Well just because
you mix strawberries with honey doesn't mean that you will
get a nice tasting result, if you get what I mean (and no,
I was not trying to say that Alone In The Dark was a good
horror movie).

While the story does have some potential, it simply feels
like we've seen this a hundred times before. There is no
originality in it at all, there is no secret ingredient in
this flick, it's just a bunch of relatively successful new
horror flicks mixed together. The movie does have some
pretty cool scenes though (even if they don't make any
sense at all) with my favourite one being a scene where a
girl is running on the wall of the cave in order to escape
the vicious monster.

Speaking of cool scenes by the way, this was just filled with
flashy effects. I'm guessing that the director thought that
his target audience would be easily impressed but there is
actually such a thing as too many effects. It feels as if
most of the flashy scenes were put in there just for the
sake of the effects since they bring absolutely nothing
to the story. I guess that I have to keep in mind however
that this is rated PG-13 so many teenage boys will probably
dig the hell out of this flick.

In the end, The Cave simply became too much for me. It was
too damn Hollywood and even if it was marketed as a horror
flick, this is more of an action thriller than anything else.
It's surprising that this wasn't based on a video game
because it sure as hell looks like one. It had it moments
but I will not recommend this, may this cave, cave in.

PG-13, enough said.

Wow! This oozes of unoriginality. I can't remember where
I've heard the score for this one before... oh wait,
I probably heard it in every other creature feature ever
produced. Ugh!

Hollywood is loosing its horror audience rapidly. We get
tons and tons of horror remakes, not only of Asian horror
movies but also of classic like The Fog and The Amityville
Horror. And when Hollywood finally produces a brand new
horror flick, it sucks! Some of the DTV horror flicks these
days are pretty damn good so why don't we get to see those
in the theatres instead of this CGI bull. The Cave is
incredibly unoriginal and filled with unimpressive, flashy
special effects. It does have its moments however but it
is definitely nothing you should be paying to see.
