A caving
expedition goes horribly wrong when a couple
of people get trapped inside an unexplored cave
system. Things go from bad to worse when they realize
that they are being hunted by an entity living in
the cave. With no way out and a monster hunting them
down, it seems like this might be the end for these
poor explorers. Will anyone survive and what is this
mysterious creature dwelling in the cave system?

Horror movies that take place in unexplored cave
systems are really popular these days it seems. Too
bad that only one of them is worth watching (I'm
naturally referring to the brilliant movie The Descent).
The Cavern, originally called Within, obviously had
a name and poster change to make a couple of bucks
extra off of The Cave's "success". Perhaps not such
a bad idea since the two movies are almost identical,
only I enjoyed most of The Cavern more than The Cave.
The movie follows a couple of people who are going to
explore a new cave-system in Russia. Naturally they
get stuck inside with a giant beast running after
them. We don't really get to see the beast until the
last five minutes but I thought that was pretty
effective. The Cavern really has a good pace and
I really was entertained through most of the movie,
until I reached the ending that is.
Now, in a review I read on IMDB, a guy said that
the main reason to watch this movie was the ending
due to the fact that it was, and I quote, "far more
sinister and interesting than the main body of the
film". But I have to disagree. The last fifteen
minutes of this movie completely ruined it for me.
Sure, the camerawork was pretty cool but the whole
thing had me giggling until the end credits started
flashing before me when I least expected them to.
I didn't find the ending sinister at all, I really
just found it corny and unoriginal. Sure, the twist
was a surprise, but only because we've seen this
twist so many times that most of us are certain that
no one is stupid enough to use it again.
If you overlook the ending however, I really thought
this was quite a pleasurable ride. The vibrant colours
were a treat for the eye, the flashy camerawork (which
was obviously inspired by The Blair Witch Project)
really managed to create some great-looking and
suspenseful scenes and the acting really wasn't half
bad. It has its flaws but if it had only ended
fifteen minutes earlier than it did, I would probably
have given it 3/5. Unfortunately, that ending ruined
a lot of the movie for me. Perhaps some might find
the movie worthless and the ending awesome, perhaps
some will agree with me. Either way, I think that
this could have been a whole lot worse.

We get guts, a guy split in half, a couple of
impalements. Not that gory, mainly implied gore.

Pretty effective soundtrack, nothing which takes
your breath away though.

The Cavern really isn't all that bad and the only
reason that I'm giving it such a low rating is
because the ending ruined the entire film experience
for me. I really don't see the point in checking
this movie out though, if you have yet to see The
Descent, check that one out instead.

I was not at all impressed with The Cavern. Yes, the movie had some gruesome death scenes...but a good majority of the movie was in darkness where you could not see anything (probably for dramatic effect), and the camera effects were completely annoying. Blair Witch had better camera control! Yes, the movie was graphically better than The Cave, but at least The Cave had a plot and a better ending than this scrap off the cutting room floor. Avoid this movie if you are not into completely lame films and GO SEE The Cave and The Descent!!! |

Better than THE CAVE, worse than THE DESCENT Writer/Director Olatunde Osunsanmi did a great job in both jobs and he could become a new cult director if he did more. It was usually dark and you could never see the killer, until the fantastic ending. It starts out good enough, gets dull, than gets great. You only care about the few characters that make it to the end, the rest are just people (Except one REALLY annoying Russian one) It's hard to tell what ripped off what, because there are MANY similarities with this and The Descent and The Cave, but that doesn't matter because most slashers/zombie movies/ghost flicks rip off each other and end up good anyway, right? So sure, If you enjoyed The Descent, you'll enjoy this (And vice-versa) so check it out: BUT AVOID "THE CAVE" |

This was gorier and more intense then I thought it would be, so yeah it was pretty decent. |
