Rudy gets kidnapped by an overweight psychopath who
locks her inside a cage where she's forced to listen
to his stories and eat his food. Why? Because he's
hoping that she will one day realize that she loves
him and wants to marry him. When Rudy finds out that
she's not the first woman to be imprisoned by this
madman, she decides to play it smart and does whatever
she can in order to stay alive.

Ever since Saw was released we've had to sit through
countless of meaningless torture flicks where girls
find themselves imprisoned and tortured for an hour
and a half worth of running time. Now, most of these
movies have been pretty bad (I still haven't managed
to erase Captivity from my head) but every once in a
while something out of the ordinary shows up like the
movie Broken - and I guess The Cellar Door falls into
that category as well... Well, almost anyway. The
Cellar Door has been receiving some great reviews and
critics have called it clever, original and brutal.
Three things which this movie is not. The Cellar Door
is pretty silly, generic as hell and very dry for a
torture flick but what makes it decent is that some
scenes are brilliantly executed. The opening scene
for example, if that didn't get your adrenaline
pumping I don't know what does.

Like I said, there's certainly nothing groundbreaking
about The Cellar Door (and there's a reason as to why
this has been released as "Broken II" in Germany). It
basically revolves around a woman in her early 30's
who gets kidnapped by some random fat maniac with a
bad temper and a cage in his basement. This cage has
just become the new home for the middle-aged woman
(oh come on, look at her poor skin, there's no way
this woman is in her 20's) named Rudy and Rudy soon
understands that in order to stay alive, she has to
get along with the chubby psychopath. In other words,
it's basically Captivity with a MUCH lower budget, a
worse cast but a slightly better story and some more
horror elements in it.

It's obvious that The Cellar Door was a low budget
effort (if that) and it doesn't even come close to
the quality of "Broken" but it does look surprisingly
decent technically and the director seems confident
behind the camera. The actors are inexperienced and
stumble more than a few times but that's acceptable.
Anyway, enough is enough, I've reviewed these kind of
movies way too many times and there's nothing new or
special about The Cellar Door. Not nearly as great as
people have made it out to be, The Cellar Door is
watchable and occasionally entertaining but I don't
think that I will be watching it again. Worth a rent
if you're still not over the whole torture porn wave
which has hopefully gone for a while now. Lord knows
we don't need a Hostel Part 3: Transvestites in
Bratislava anytime soon.

Some stabbings and some minor gore.

There's nothing special to say here and I find it
sad that I rarely have anything to comment on in this
section anymore.

It's a low-budget torture porn flick and it certainly
isn't anything we haven't seen before. It's decent,
it's fairly entertaining, it has some suspenseful
moments and perhaps it's worth a rent if you have
nothing better to do. I just didn't find it very
exciting though, watchable but not much more.
