I'll be honest with you, I don't know how to describe this
story at all. The story basically involves a woman who used
to play the cello until one day when her best friend died in
a tragic car accident. Soon, she starts having ghostly
encounters and starts to wonder if perhaps it's her friend
who has returned.

Cello was the last South Korean scare of this summer following
the two hit movies "Red Shoes" and "The Wig". Out of the three,
Cello sadly is the worst one. The atmosphere is there and there
are a couple of scares along the way but the story is just so
poorly executed that it's hard for the audience to follow it
even though they've tried to explain it all in the end with a
couple of very predictable twists. In other words, this had
everything going for it except for the story. I mean, as you
can see, I couldn't even find the words to describe the story
in a good way.
The movie borrows heavily from the awesome dramatic horror
flick "Acacia" but what grabbed the audience in Acacia, fails
to grab the audience in Cello. The directing is brilliant and
as expected, the photography is beautiful. Those Koreans sure
know how to use their colours right as it is a treat for the
eye. The acting is also top-notch but since we really don't
get to know a whole lot about the characters, we really don't
care much about what happens to them even though the director
clearly wanted it to be a bit more disturbing than the average
Asian horror flick.
It's obvious that the Asians are running out of ideas as far
as horror movies are concerned. I mean, a haunted cello (well
not exactly, but basically) isn't exactly what I would
consider scary. And once again they have used a longhaired
ghost girl to scare us. Well, I'm so used to seeing them in
these movies now that they hardly scare me anymore. As I've
said many times before, Asia needs to move on and try to make
something a little bit more original than this. We've seen it
lots of times before and in much better versions. Cello is
definitely not a movie that you have to see because it's nothing
that a fan of Asian horror movies haven't seen before.

Some blood splatter, nothing special.

The beautiful classical cello music does work but feels anything
but original. I mean, hasn't Ave Maria been used just a couple
of times too many in horror flicks all ready?

Unoriginal and slow ghost flick with a great atmosphere but a
story which struggles to keep its audience interested. There
are a couple of scares on the way, but they're really not worth
sticking around for so with that being said, I don't think that
Cello is a movie that you need to have in your collection as
we've all seen this way too many times before.
