Seven students are going to rust up an old opera
house which closed down after the lead singer
Lorraine was mysteriously killed by a man in a
clown suit many years ago. What the seven
students aren't aware of is that the killer is
back to slaughter anyone who enters the opera
house and it doesn't take long before there is
no exit as someone has locked them inside. Will
the seven students survive? Or will they all
become a part of the opera house's legend?

The Clown At Midnight is one of those flicks
that popped up on the shelves in your local
rental store but then disappeared as soon as
it came. It never even got to see the day of
a DVD release. Why? I've asked myself that
question many times. When I checked this out
back in 1998 I really loved it and so a while
ago I decided that I wanted to see it again
but on a proper widescreen 5.1 DVD release.
Well, unlucky for me it turns out that it's
only been released in a couple of countries
and the DVD releases are really awful with no
extras and 2.0 sound with a full screen
presentation, can you even call that a DVD?
That's no better than VHS.

The acting is pretty good, Tatyana Ali from
Fresh Prince In Bel-Air feels kind of out of
place though but I guess they hired her to
bring more attention to the movie. We also
get to see old horror icons like Cristopher
Plummer and Margot Kidder, too bad they don't
have too much on screen time. The directing
is nothing special pretty basic stuff and
the movie could really have used a couple of
scares here and there. One thing I did like
about the directing however was how the
director brought back the italian giallo
feeling from the good old days. That really
was something that the movie had going for it.

I've always loved the slasher concept of having
a clown killing a bunch of students and that's
exactly what this is. Some people might think
I give it too much credit but I really enjoyed
this film the first time and now, six years
later I still really enjoy it. It is the best
clown horror flick since "It" and no one can deny
that. For anyone who's a fan of killer clowns,
this is a must, order the DVD from Europe even
if it isn't a very good DVD release, I prefer
the German one as it has gotten the best
treatment by far.

We get a decapitation by axe, a burnt body,
a spear through one's stomach and my favourite
but least gory kill is where the teacher gets
an axe in the face, don't ask me why but that
scene is killer.

I remember me liking the soundtrack for this
back in 98 but it's a very 90s soundtrack with
cheap R'n'B music and some pop semi rock music
which today I can't say works very well. We
also get some opera music obviously.

My all time favourite clown slasher flick
I think. It's really a shame that it never
got to see the day of a US DVD release as
it surely deserves it. Order this from eBay
if you still haven't seen it, it's one of
the most memorable slashers of the 90s.
