Gamers
from all over Holland have gathered at a game
convention to find out about the latest game. After
the convention, most of the gamers go home, but for
a few of them, the night has just begun. They've all
received text messages saying that they should stay in
the building after everyone has left and play the game.
Since the prize money is 1 million euros, they all
decide to stay. What they don't know is that the
subject of the game is surviving - in real life. They
soon realize that they're trapped inside the building
with a serial killer after them.

Complexx is not exactly a complex horror movie, this
is a by the numbers slasher flick and we've seen the
concept been used several times before (Backstabbed,
Final Stab etc), however this is a pretty decent
little slasher flick from the country that went from
making no horror movies at all to making four within
a year and it beats the hell out of the other indie
slasher flick, Woensdag.
The story revolves around a bunch of random people who
decide to stay inside a big building after a game
convention. They've been told that they'll be
participating in a new game and that the winner will
receive 1 million euros - but naturally there's a
catch. Inside the building is a psychotic serial
killer called Scorpion, no one knows his identity
and while trying to stay alive, they also have to
figure out who can be trusted and who can't. In other
words, this is a pretty basic slasher flick.
Since the movie was shot on a relatively low budget,
there are naturally many flaws to be found and the
script really isn't the movie's strongest side. As
the movie goes along we're introduced to a new
character every now and then with the only purpose
of making the body count bigger. We all know who's
going to survive from the first frame so the new
characters that pop up along the way seem pretty
pointless - but as I said before, they probably just
needed a higher body count.
The main characters are all pretty flat with simple
dialogues, I guess that's because most of the actors
are rookies. However, they do a pretty decent job and
Kirsten Walraad gives us a surprisingly strong
performance (or maybe she just put me under a spell
with those gorgeous eyes of hers). Technically, the
movie looks all right. You can tell that the director
was quite inexperienced but considering the budget,
it could have looked a lot worse.
Ultimately, Complexx is a decent slasher flick and
worth a rent - especially if you're Dutch. It doesn't
stumble into any new territory and it's a pretty
predictable ride with a lot of clichés, but it's
still pretty entertaining. Check it out if you're in
the mood for a generic slasher flick.

The killer uses a knife so naturally it's not very
gory. Some blood splatter but nothing special.

The rock music was fairly decent, as was the dance
music (but I had expected better from the country
of trance music). As for the suspense score, it was
average, some nice touches here and there but
nothing extraordinary.

Generic but mildly entertaining slasher flick which
doesn't try coming up with a new and inventive twist
on the slasher concept - or maybe they did but were
just unaware that there are all ready several movies
with the same plot out there all ready. Either way,
it's worth a rent if you're into slasher flicks as
much as I am, but don't expect anything special.
