Four
attractive and rich jock-types with awesome super
powers have an awesome life, and get all the hot girls,
and go to all the awesome party's with their awesome
friends. When they're not at party's, they're cruising
around in their awesome cars, or getting in awesome
battles with their arch enemy who wants all of their
awesome powers. People, this is The Covenant.

After the mediocre Exorcist prequel, Renny Harlin returns
to what he knows best - action thriller with a hint of
horror. Unfortunately, The Covenant is no Mindhunters.
The story is utterly ridiculous and feels like a poor
mix between The Craft and Matrix, and it's obvious that
this was made for the less educated audience; the teens.
Following a bunch of flawless rich guys with super
powers, this teen-thriller wannabe fails miserably
at connecting with the audience. Sure, a couple of
under-aged girls might have whispered "Oh, he's hot"
during the movie, but honestly, could you care less
about what happens to a bunch of rich guys that have
just about everything they want? Which leads me to
the acting. Laura Ramsey pulls off a decent, yet
forgettable performance, while the males in the movie
seem to fight for on-screen time. I mean, these four
guys (who call themselves The Covenant - how pathetic
is that?) are supposed to be best friends, but not
even they seem to care much about each other. When one
of them ends up in the hospital, none of the other
guys are really bothered.
The Covenant is supposed to be an action/horror/thriller,
right? And while I did get plenty of "Uwe Boll"-style
action scenes, there was not an inch of suspense or
atmosphere to be found in here. It was all so bland
and unexciting. Even though the movie was packed with
loud sound effects, I felt like falling asleep every
fifth minute just because it was so dull. Just because
a movie is filled with action scenes and over-the-top
special effects, it doesn't mean that it's well-paced.
Speaking of special effects. For most of the time the
boys either fly around in the air (a la Matrix) or
throw giant blobs at each other, and to me, that's not
action - it's someone trying to cover up a bad movie
with expensive-looking (but still very cheap) computer
effects. Well guess what? We've seen it before, and
it's not that exciting anymore.
I'm sure this might be entertaining for adolescent boys,
and I sure am glad that it was rated PG-13 because I can't
see anyone above the age of 16 taking this movie seriously.
It's an immature teen action-flick and it doesn't
deserve your attention, so please go ahead and ignore
that this movie was ever made and let's hope that Renny
Harlin gets his act together for his next movie.

No.

Rock. Rock, rock, rock. And not good rock, but mainstream
teen rock. What a surprise ey?

Terrible and immature action flick about a bunch of
rich kids who have special powers. This movie is about
as uninteresting as action thrillers get and even though
I never saw it, I'm sure that even Basic Instinct 2 was
more exciting than this. Don't bother.
