A young couple moves into a house on the country with
their new-born baby, Sam, to be able to give him the
upbringing that he deserves. The couple has several
issues to resolve as the mother of Sam is suffering
from post-partum depression, and it doesn't get any
easier when they realize that their house is haunted
by a spirit who wants their baby.

What is it with haunted houses + babies in horror
flicks these days? It's not a good concept! The only
movie to succeed with the baby horror genre recently
was "The Baby's Room", and "The Cradle" is more or
less the tamer version of that movie. The Cradle is
an extremely depressing and slow-paced ghost story
with not enough chills and way too many drawn out
drama scenes. It's about a young couple who's just
moved into a house on the country with their baby and
it doesn't take long for them to realize that they're
not alone in the house.

I had to watch this movie four times before I was
finally able to watch it until the very end without
falling asleep. Seriously, this movie isn't just slow
paced, it simply doesn't have a pace. It's like
watching mould grow. To make up for the slow pace of
the movie we're treated with an ending that probably
felt clever to the inexperienced crew behind this
movie but is really very cliché. I knew how the movie
was going to end after five minutes so I'm not even
sure why I bothered to watch it until the end. I guess
I was hoping that it'd eventually kick off with some
good scares and a creepy atmosphere, but it never did.
It remained gloomy and dull through and through.

The few horror scenes that we actually do get though
are far from scary. There's a scene in here, and I'm
not lying, where an old woman sits in her couch and
screams in fear as the wind opens and closes her
windows. Ehmm... come on, this wouldn't even have
scared the audience in the 70s when movies like
Rosemary's Baby were considered to be frightening.
Ultimately, The Cradle really disappointed me. I had
expected a creepy ghost movie with a fairly decent
budget but what I got was a low-budget drama with a
thin storyline and some ridiculously dull characters.

Why do people insist on making these gloomy horror
flicks? Like I've said many times before, horror movies
are meant to entertain, not depress - hence why the
horror comedy genre has become so popular. I still
haven't heard of a successful gloomy horror flick so
come on people, stop making them!

Nope.

Very silent, nothing much.

Dull low-budget ghost story with too much drama and
not enough scares. You'll need to be a very accepting
person to be able to stick with it until the end as
it has some extreme pacing problems - and I think that
even the people behind the movie can agree with me
on that. Bottom line; The Cradle is not a good movie.
