After
Philip got dumped in a reality-TV show
called "Lovers Lane" he decided that it was time
for him to host a reality-TV show of his own.
He brings a couple of hot 20-somethings out to
a big house in the middle of nowhere. Now, these
people think that they are going to be in a
public TV show, but this show is just for Philip.
A couple of years ago, it was very popular to
make reality-TV horror films and we ended up
with some great slashers like "My Little Eye"
and "Kolobos" while we also got some awful ones
like "Voyeur.Com". Now I'm guessing that the
producers behind this movie haven’t seen these
films since I think that we can all agree on
that the reality-TV horror genre died for a reason.
Either way, what we have here is a fairly
incompetent slasher flick with a crazy guy and
his brother killing off a bunch of people who
think that they are starring in a reality-TV
show. So pretty much "My Little Eye" only less
everything. There is no suspense or tension at
any time in this movie and while the first 30
minutes or so show some potential, it all goes
down the drain after that when it turns out that
Philip's retarded brother is the one doing most
of the killing.
The acting is a mixed bag and it's a shame to see
some of these talents go to waste like this. I'm
a big Jaime Pressly fan, she's hot, she's a fairly
good actress and she's got style - unfortunately
she didn't have a very big role in this flick.
Edward Furlong is another one of the talents in
this slasher along with Laura Ramsey, Andrew
Keegan and Susan Ward. Daniel Franzese is terrible
here however and far from as good as he was in
Mean Girls. He should definitely stay away from
slasher flicks and stick to silly teen comedies
as he makes a terrible villain.
Cruel World should've been so much better with
a competent cast and a story which has worked
before. However, it ultimately fails to deliver
the goods and we're stuck with a mildly
entertaining but far from good thriller comedy.
Skip this one and go rent My Little Eye again
if you're in the mood for a reality-TV slasher.
Gorier than expected with finger dismemberments,
some intestines, an impalement, a decent
decapitation and an arm chopped off.
While the rock music is fairly good, the pop
music is like torture to the ears. A good
soundtrack wouldn't have helped this movie
anyway so I guess it doesn't really matter.
With a hot and competent cast, it's surprising
how bad Cruel World turned out to be. We have
all seen this story before with different and
better twists. Skip this reality-TV slasher and
go rent Kolobos or My Little Eye again.
