After having played guinea pig in a failed experiment
which was supposed to recover his memory, a man, who
doesn't even know his own name, escapes from the
mental institution. He runs into a teenage boy named
Stanley and they quickly become friends. Together they
try to find out what dark secrets Stanley's stepfather
is hiding - but they have no idea just how dark his
secrets really are.

Mindfire Entertainment seems to be Anchor Bay's biggest
supplier of DTV horror flicks, and while you can always
expect a good-looking movie from the folks at Mindfire,
the quality of the plots have proven to often disappoint.
Fortunately, The Darkroom turned out to be quite decent.
It's not the most clever of horror flicks, nor the
most original, but if you're looking for a way to kill
some time, this will do the trick.

The story revolves around a man who has just escaped
from a mental institution after having taken part in
an experiment which had the purpose of recovering his
memory. The experiment wasn't a total failure but the
drugs make him hallucinate and see horrible things
around him (flashes from his past of course). He meets
a teenaged boy named Stanley, and for some reason they
become friends. Stanley's stepfather sneaks out every
night and together they decide to find out what he's
really up to. Perhaps not the most brilliant of ideas.

Darkroom is not so much of a monster flick (even though
there is a pretty cool mud monster in here) as it is a
drama - and a quite good one at that as well. The
friendship between the two main characters feels real
and you quickly root for poor Stanley (played by
Desperate Housewive's Shawn Pyfrom). The acting is
above average with a surprisingly good cast and some
fairly believable dialogues as well.

In the end, this is the kind of movie that sucks you
in just enough to make you watch it until the end. It's
not a great movie and you'll probably have guessed the
ending after 20 minutes or so, but it'll keep you
entertained through and through - something which isn't
all that common in DTV horror flicks anymore. I couldn't
help but to feel like this was a Masters Of Horror
episode from time to time, so if you like that show,
perhaps this is worth checking out.

Some slashed throats, not a lot.

It does the trick but not a whole lot more.

There's really not a whole lot to say about this movie.
It's a forgettable, but fairly entertaining horror-drama
which is just good enough to make you keep watching till
the very end. If you've got nothing better to watch,
you might as well check this one out.
