Ji-won is a college student who's suffering from
amnesia. She decides to be a good student and
make the best of it. After a while she realizes
that something might not be right. She starts
seeing strange things and people who claim that
they used to be friends with her come up to her
and tell her to stop acting so clueless. These
so called friends are also dropping dead one
by one and Ji-won is torn between the present
and her dark past.

Yet another fresh horror movie from South Korea.
Dead Friend might be one of the least original
Ringu rip-offs ever but I don't know if that's
bad or good, I mean, Ringu is a brilliant film
and if you take a concept and just change it a
bit and keep it good and fresh, can it really
be bad? Anyway, I know that I liked Dead Friend
a whole lot more than I thought that I would
when the movie opened. See the movie opens with
three girls sitting playing with an ouija-board
and then one of the girls sister is killed by
a ghost after having puked up gallons of water.

The acting is a mixed bag, Kim Ha Neul is the
only really good actress in this movie as far
as I can tell. I didn't think that the rest of
the cast was that convincing, I mean, they're
better than DTV actors but I just didn't get
the feeling that these were real people, and
just because you can cry on demand doesn't
make you a good actress.

Kim Tae Gyeong sure knows how to make one hell
of a classy rip-off. The directing is excellent,
freaked me out loads of times. Even if all Asian
horror movies seem to have the same concept these
days, they still manage to make me jump like hell
and they still manage to create the intense
atmosphere that a movie of this calibre needs.
I don't care if people have started getting sick
of all these Ring copycats, as long as they
manage to creep me out, I say, keep 'em coming.

Not gory in the least.

Thank god, they've brought back the creepy bells
to horror movies again. The signature melody for
this movie kind of reminded me of the one used
in One Missed Call. Anyway, the soundtrack is
terrific and manages to create the perfect atmosphere,
piano music is always a nice touch.

If you don't mind watching a very un-original
horror flick which still manages to keep your
interest, this is a very good choice. Dead Friend
does have its own story and all but the twists
are predictable and it feels as if you've seen
the same thing about a hundred times before.
Well, I'm still not getting sick of it and
if you aren't either, check it out!
