Diego is on his
way to celebrate the day of the dead
when he's captured by evil spirits. Later the same
night, he wakes up in the middle of nowhere, only
to realize that it's not the same night. It's one
year later, and he's been dead all this time. So why
can't his spirit rest? What is his mission as a lost
soul? He tries to figure it out while people around
him start to die under mysterious circumstances.

That 70's Show's Fez becomes a zombie superhero in
this comic book adaptation with too much drama and not
enough action. Surely, The Dead One (or El Muerto as
it was originally called) is a very entertaining
movie for Mexicans since it tackles the day of the
dead concept in a very subtle and religious way, but
seeing as how it was mainly made for the American
audience, I doubt that many will be pleased by this.
Simply because we don't have the same believes, plus
the fact that it's not a very good movie in general.
The movie revolves around Diego who wakes up in the
middle of nowhere, only to realize that he's been
dead for a whole year and that he know has superhuman
strengths. He can heal people, he can't feel pain and
he's invincible. The only problem is, someone is
killing people around Diego and it seems as if he's
somehow involved in the mysterious murders. As you
can probably tell, the plot simply isn't very
engaging. It's difficult to root for Diego as his
character is both winy and annoying. The movie also
has a very dark and depressing tone to it which
makes it even less enjoyable.
I mean, dark movies can be great, but movies shouldn't
make you depressed. That kind of defeats the whole
purpose of the movie if you ask me. Another thing
which annoyed me was the fact that there's not really
any horror in it, even though it was clearly meant
to be a horror flick. It's just a gloomy dull movie
that leads to a clichéd climax. On a more positive
note however, the cinematography is slick and the
movie is really easy for the eye. The director doesn't
try anything new and is satisfied with being average,
and as horrible as it might sound, that also satisfied
me. I'm sick of directors trying "new" things like
shaking the camera around, using camcorders to shoot
some scenes etc. So the normal directing was nice.
Ultimately though, I can't say that I liked The Dead
One. It's a zombie film missing all the gore, suspense
and atmosphere - so what does that leave us with?
An incredibly slow-paced and uneventful movie. If
you're Mexican, I'm sure you will be able to enjoy
it more than I did. But if you're looking for a horror
flick, this is not one you should be checking out.

Not much to say here. Some wounds.

Noisy rock music and generic background music.

Dull and forgettable zombie movie with no action, no
gore, no suspense, no thrills, and the list goes on
and on. I think I headed into this expecting too much
of a horror flick and perhaps that's why I'm a bit
disappointed. It's not horrible, but it's just too
dull and gloomy for me.
