Ton gets
sent to a boarding school by his parents since
they consider his current school to have too low
standards. Unhappy with his parents decision, he
doesn't even say goodbye to them when they leave. He's
immediately invited by the main gang in the dorm to
listen to scary ghost stories the first night. What
no one knows is that one of them is actually real...

From the producers of Shutter comes this ultra creepy
horror flick... nah, I'm just kidding. While it is in
fact a movie by the producers of Shutter, it's not a
horror flick - even though it's been falsely marketed
as one. I know that many people went in expecting a
chilling tale of horror and were let down when the
movie turned out to be a drama, but I knew this before
heading in and I was actually pleasantly surprised by
how good it was.
The movie starts out like any other Asian horror flick;
creepy ghost stories, strange things happening late at
night, good scares and so on. But perhaps the producers
of Shutter quit the project after 30 minutes because we
quickly realize that the new friend that Ton has made,
is in fact the ghost that had been terrorizing him in
the first 30 minutes - but in his words he was just
fooling around. Ton is a bit scared at first when he
finds out that his new friend Vichai is a ghost and
that he is the only one who can see him, but he
gradually learns to accept Vichai's differences and
they end up becoming really good friends.
So what's the goal of the movie? Well every night at
6pm, Vichai has to go through the drowning process all
over again - yeah, he died in the school's swimming
pool. So Ton has to figure out a way to stop this and
give Vichai the rest that he deserves. Scary? Not at
all, but man is it touching. As a horror movie, Dorm
doesn't work on any level, but as a drama, Dorm is
powerful, gripping and extremely well executed. You
feel for almost all of the characters and when the
movie finally comes to an end, you might find yourself
wiping a tear off from your eye.
For a Thai movie, Dorm looks absolutely terrific. The
contrasts are powerful and the cinematography is
stunning. The acting is also really impressive,
especially considering that these are all child
actors. I could go on and on praising this movie but
I won't. I'm pretty sure that most of you stopped
reading when I said that this was a drama and not a
horror movie, but give it a chance. It's a powerful
movie and it's not to be missed.

No.

Powerful soundtrack which accompanies the movie well.
The strings and piano blend brilliantly together.

Powerful and touching drama about adapting to a new
school more or less, something that I think all of us
can relate to. It's not a horror movie, except for
perhaps the first 30 minutes or so, so don't go in
expecting a creepy movie. Give it a chance though as
it's a great drama which deserves a lot of credit.
