A young man has just moved into his first apartment and
it sure isn't a catch. The apartment is very sleazy and
the neighbours keep making loud noises. Soon he also
starts having strange visions of a female ghost. Is the
building haunted or is it just his imagination.

It seems
as if every Asian country wants to join in on
the creepy longhaired female ghost concept. Japan started
it all with Ringu and shortly after South Korea and
Thailand joined in on the fun. Even the small country
Hong Kong decided to give it a shot and now, it's time
for the Philippines as well. Now it's always nice when
countries that aren't very well known for making movies at
all make a horror flick but even though the makers tried
desperately to make something original, we've just seen
this way too many times before.
The story basically revolves around a guy who moves into
an apartment where another guy used to live. The guy who
used to live in the apartment helped a woman who was
brutally beaten up every night by her abusive husband. Well,
soon the young man starts to have visions of the woman, is
she a ghost? Is she still alive? Or is it all in his head?
We get creepy elevator scenes, a creepy ghost girl and a
mildly entertaining story with lots of cheap scares and
while I really wanted to like this flick, The Echo just
felt like it was way too long and had way too little
originality in it. The story is only interesting every
now and then and with a pretty weak script, we can only
enjoy ourselves by jumping high in our seats when the loud
noises kick in. As a matter of fact, if there were no
scares in this flick, it would have been an incredibly
slow horror movie as that's the main thing that kept me
from turning it off (well that, and the fact that I had
nothing better to watch).
The Echo is a pretty decent horror attempt from the
Philippines and I hope that we will get to see more flicks
from them in the future, while I also hope that they will
be a little more original and a little less dull than
this one was. I'm sure many people will disagree with
me on this flick however as I understand that it's not
for everybody. If you're a fan of Asian horror flicks,
like I am (even though I'm starting to think that Asia
is loosing the touch) I will still recommend this one as
it has some decent scares and a mildly entertaining story.

Some minor blood but nothing worth mentioning.

The piano and violin music is pretty effective, but just
like with the rest of the movie, it feels too unoriginal.

Here's a movie that has become extremely over hyped. I guess
I went in with too high expectations since I felt a little
disappointed in this wannabe Ring rip-off. It has a pretty
decent plot though and there are some good scares in it
which will keep you entertained. Even though it might not
be the best Asian horror movie that I've seen, I still
think you ought to give this one a shot, if not for the
scares but for the fact that it's one of the few Philippine
horror flicks out there.
