A man wakes up in a low-tech underground cave system
called Eden Log. Completely covered in mud and
surrounded by darkness he has to figure out how to
get out of this place. At first sight it seems
abandoned but as he gets further and further into the
cave system, he soon realizes that he's not alone...

I don't want to spoil too much by revealing the entire
plot so that's why I wanted to write such a short
plot description. Eden Log certainly is a different
kind of horror movie, if you can even call it that.
This isn't your run-by-the-mill Ring rip-off or your
mediocre slasher flick with a masked killer. You just
can't sum a movie like this up in just a couple of
words. It's an abstract and artistic sci-fi horror
set in the not too distant future. It's gloomy, it's
dark, and it's definitely not a movie for everyone.
Heck, I'm not even sure that I completely got it which
is perhaps the reason as to why my opinion of this
film is so torn.

Eden Log is presented with almost no colours. It's
inches away from being a black and white film actually
but I didn't find this to be a problem. On the contrary,
it uses the greyscale very well and gave the movie a
very dirty and raw feeling. This is just how I would
imagine that the future would look like; grey,
miserable and depressing with no sense of hope. But
Eden Log isn't without its problems, far from it.
Eden Log struggles to keep a consistent pace throughout
the movie and there were honestly moments were I was
rather bored. There was barely any dialogue in the
entire movie, and the dialogues that we got felt quite
unnecessary and didn't really bring the movie any
further. Basically this could have been a silent film
in black and white and that's probably what they were
going for. Some people may have big issues with this
but I found it somewhat refreshing even though this
added to the slow pace of it all.

What really made this movie worth while was its
haunting atmosphere and its sense of reality even
though it was set in the future. It doesn't really
have much of a plot but in one way or another they
manage to tell an intriguing story any way and I
really commend them for managing to pull that off.
In the end, it's certainly a very original film and
I have no idea where first time director Frank Vestiel
got his inspiration from since this is nothing like
any other Sci-Fi film I've ever seen before. It's just
a very unique ride, even if it is a bit too slow at
times. If you want to see something completely out of
the ordinary, you need to check Eden Log out, just
don't expect it to be a non-stop rollercoaster of
horror and action because it's not. It's far from it.

Some intestines, nothing much.

I've only got one word to say about the soundtrack;
Spectacular! Simply spectacular. Lifted the movie to
a whole other level. Great stuff.

One of the strangest films I've ever seen. Eden Log
certainly isn't that you would expect to see at a big
screen theatre and I somehow get now why this only got
a very limited release in France. It's just not for
the mainstream audience. If you enjoy the occasional
arty sci-fi horror flick, be sure to check Eden Log out.
