When his fiancé runs out on him, leaving him standing
alone at the altar, Spencer goes mad with rage and
ends up beating her half to death. A cop manages to
stop him and shoots him three times. Since the cop is
broke and his girlfriend wants a nice ring on her
finger, he decides to steal the ring from the bride.
Bad idea. Soon enough, the cursed ring wanders from
one unlucky girl to the other, leaving everyone who
comes in contact with it dead.

Well this was an amusing nice little surprise. Death
By Engagement, and pardon the bad pun, is a
surprisingly engaging horror comedy with some clever
jokes and a neat semi-original story. Yes guys, it
is indeed a slasher flick, but not the normal hack
and slash routine. This time, a serial killer goes
after women who have been unfortunate enough to get
a hold of a very valuable engagement ring. Sounds
rather corny right? Well that's the whole charm of
the movie. It's corny and it knows it and uses it
as much as it can in its advantage. It doesn't use
gore to engage the viewer, instead it uses some very
different and amusing characters (the female cop was
my personal favourite, every time she opened her mouth
I knew that she was about to say something clever and
and witty) as well as a nicely written story.

So what's so special about a slasher comedy where a
killer goes after women with a certain ring you ask.
Well it's not so much the concept, it's the fact that
the story is so cleverly written that you have to
figure out for your own how the women got a hold of
the ring. See, there's a connection between all of
the murders and when we finally get to find out how
the ring got to each person, it's so far-fetched that
it actually feels plausible. That doesn't make much
sense but this movie doesn't take itself very seriously
so it doesn't matter.

Still, Death By Engagement isn't without its flaws
though. The movie is nearly 100 minutes long and after
80 minutes it starts to drag. Sure it was semi-amusing
at first but someone took the joke a bit too far.
They could have easily chopped away 15 of the final
twenty minutes without it having damaged the outcome
of the film. Either way, I'm still going to recommend
Death By Engagement as it's a pretty funny slasher
movie with a neat story and some good jokes that will
have you giggling (no laughing out loud jokes though).
With subtle humour and an amusing, corny story-line,
this movie is sure to win many horror fans hearts.

A finger cut off and some bloody bashings is really
all we get - but we don't need more.

Average rock music, obviously by an unsigned band (or
so I hope), it wasn't awful but it wasn't great.

Death By Engagement is a corny slasher comedy in all
the right ways. This movie is sure to keep you amused
but probably won't stay with you for very long. I was
pleasantly surprised though and I warmly recommend it
for a boring rainy night with your friends.
