Erin Bruner is a lawyer on the rise. She decides to take on
a very difficult case, mainly for the fame. The case involves
a priest who have been accused of negligent homicide on a
young girl called Emily Rose but the priest believes that
Emily was in fact possessed by demons. Will the jury believe
Father Moore's story or will Erin loose this case?

At first I thought that this was going to be a The Exorcist
rip-off and I'm sure I wasn't the only one thinking that.
Well, the only thing that this has in common with The
Exorcist is that there is an exorcism in the movie, other
than that, this actually turned out to be a very original
movie. Well, as original as they get from Hollywood anyway.
The story is definitely a good and interesting one but the
fact is that this was incredibly falsely marketed and I had
expected to see something with a little more horror in it.

The movie, which actually turned out to be a courtroom drama
rather than a horror movie lacks big time in the horror
department. Sure, there is a creepy atmosphere surrounding
the story of Emily Rose, but even though the movie is
approximately two hours long, there still wasn't time enough
to tell the entire story. Instead, there is too much focus
on whether Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson) will win or loose
the case while the movie really needed to focus more on
Emily Rose. We never really got to know the real Emily and
Jennifer Carpenter never gets to show off her acting skills
since she spends 90% of her onscreen time screaming and
playing psychotic/possessed.

Scott Derrickson directs this movie brilliantly though and
I definitely believe that this will become a classic with
time as it's nothing that we've ever really seen before,
that and courtroom dramas always seem to become cult movies
with time. This is still one of the better theatrical horror
movies I have seen in quite some time though and it's nice
to see that Hollywood hasn't completely abandoned making up
new horror stories.

If you're looking for a scary horror flick, The Exorcism Of
Emily Rose will probably disappoint you. But if you're looking
for a relatively creepy and unsettling horror drama, this is
one I can recommend. It doesn't try to upset religious people,
and it doesn't try to question our faith. It actually speaks
out to everyone, even people who aren't believers and this
was a very nice touch. It might have its flaws and it might
not be a brilliant movie, but it sure as hell is one of the
most original ones that Hollywood has produced this year.

Nothing to mention here.

Since it's a courtroom drama for most of the time, there
isn't really a whole lot of music, but we do get some nice
and creepy violins every now and then along with some
very suspenseful piano music.

While The Exorcism Of Emily Rose might not have been as
scary as I would have expected it to be, it was still more
original than I had expected which was definitely nice. It
does have a creepy atmosphere surrounding it and two hours
do fly by pretty quickly, but the lack of depth in Emily's
character made the movie loose points.
