Stellan Skarsgaard plays Father Merrin in this latest
s(pr)equel to the cult horror hit The Exorcist. Father
Merrin is haunted by his memories from WWII and no
longer considers himself as a priest. Right now he's
at an archaeology expedition in Cairo where they've
recently discovered a church buried under the sand.
Well, they're about to open the gate to hell without
even knowing it for this church was not made for god.

Not being an exorcist fan, I don't know why I expected
this to be good. Everyone keeps telling me how scary
and intense it is, I just didn't think it was, I mean,
at all. The trailer for the movie made me think of it
as a stand-alone movie, it didn't even occur to me until
20 minutes into the movie that I was actually watching
another one of those Exorcist flicks that I've never
been very fond of. Say what you want but I will always
think of The Exorcist as a movie where a guy has filmed
a girl who's sick in bed. I mean, I'll lie down in my
bed and puke green gooey stuff for one and a half hour
as well if that's what scares you but it just doesn't
scare me that much (knock on wood).

If you've read other reviews on the net of this film I'm
sure you've read this many times but just to make it clear
I'll say it as well, Stellan Skarsgaard is the heart of
this movie. Without him in it I don't think it would've
worked at all. I mean, sure Isabella Scorupco is a good
actress but not good enough to save an entire movie from
disaster, Stellan is. The directing is the kind that you
would expect from Renny Harlin, beautiful but sometimes
not exactly the way that you would have wanted it to be. There
are a couple of jumps here and there though but I'm not
a big fan of cheap scares so that didn't really matter.

The Exorcist IV might not be a total waste of time but
in my opinion it goes on for too long and doesn't have
a story interesting enough. I don't like the fact that
the film takes place in Cairo either, I didn't like it
in The Exorcist II either. I won't advice you not to
see it because I think that it's pretty obvious that
fans of the other Exorcist movies will probably love
this one. It has everything that an The Exorcist movie
should have in it + a whole lot more. I still think that
this is the best of the sequels, even if that wouldn't
tell you much.

Relatively messy with a bloodbath massacre, some spear
impalements, a couple of fingers snapped off, a slit
throat and a crow munching on an eyeball. Luckily there
was no puking girl in this one though.

Suits the movie pretty well. The sound effects are nice
and the music that Isabella keeps on playing in her
little shack is pretty nice to set the atmosphere.

The Exorcist 4 is definitely not a bad movie, I'm just
a little curious if the version that wasn't released on
cinemas would've been better. The worst thing about the
movie was probably the very bad CGI effects that they
had used for the hyena's, I bet ya many people choked
on their popcorn when they appeared for the first time.
I can only recommend this for people who liked the
other Exorcist films, if you didn't like the others,
you will not like this one very much either.
