The promising athletes at a sports academy are
being picked off one by one by a mysterious,
javelin wielding killer. Will anyone be able
to make it to the 1994 Olympics or will everyone
fall victim of this gruesome killer?

At first I thought that Fatal Games was just a
different title for Graduation Day but I decided
to look it up on IMDB anyway and to my surprise,
this was yet another 80s sport-themed slasher
flick. Naturally I started watching it as soon
as I found out that the killer's choice of
weapon was a javelin, unfortunately for me,
this was also pretty much the only weapon that
the killer used in this entire movie.

Fatal Games gets going relatively quickly and
the body count begins after only a couple of
minutes which was highly appreciated as the story
isn't very intriguing. I mean, let's face it,
we've all ready seen this story in Graduation
Day. Anyway, so the first victim gets impaled
by a javelin and now, I don't know about you,
but I thought that was a very memorable scene.
When the second victim is also impaled by a
javelin, my suspicions started to grow, and
when the 3rd, 4th and 5th victims had been
impaled by javelins, I was pretty much fed up
with the entire concept.

In 1984, the first slasher wave of the 80s had
just died out and therefore it was harder to
find funding for movies like this. This caused
Fatal Games to become a very low budget production
and it's very easy to tell as well. The soundtrack
is jaw-droppingly horrific, the gore effects
could have been done by a 5-year old, the
directing is very basic and the acting is just
above porn movie standards.

Still, Fatal Games is just slightly better than
Graduation Day, despite the lower budget. The
pacing is better and the characters are... well,
at least there are characters. So if you're
craving for a sports-themed slasher flick, this
is probably the one that I'm going to have to
recommend, but that still doesn't make this a
good movie on any level, just bearable.

Javelin impalements, javelin impalements and
oh, did I mention javelin impalements?

As I said before, the soundtrack is jaw-droppingly
horrific. The loud synth score is anything but
pleasure for the ears and sounds like a very
failed attempt at ripping off the score from
some Friday the 13th sequel.

Fatal Games is just slightly better than the
other sports-themed slasher flick from the early
80s, Graduation Day but this still isn't a good
movie. It's very repetitive and even though it's
got a good pace, the low budget works against
this movie on so many levels.
