"A standard ghost story and not a very good one at that"

Zhi Rong lives a very unhappy life in Taiwan. He has a
horrible scar covering most of his face and he's stuck
at a job that he hates. One day he decides to end it
all but instead of dying his soul is transferred into
the body of a Thai man called Asanee. Zhi Rong quickly
falls in love with his new life as Asanee, but everything
comes with a price and it doesn't take long before
he starts having ghostly apparitions.

There's always at least one company that is well-known
for producing bad movies in each country and in Thailand
it's Right Beyond. They've churned out some of the
most awful horror movies out there (such as last years
Dark Water). The Fatality is a collaboration between
Taiwan and Thailand and since it failed disastrously
at the box-office in Taiwan, I wasn't too excited to
watch this. Surprisingly enough, The Fatality comes
out as one of Right Beyond's stronger titles. The
content of The Fatality is mostly Thai though so I can
see why it failed in Taiwan as 80% of the dialogue is
in Thai language. Only the first ten minutes or so
actually take place in Taiwan.

As for the story, it's not the most original one out
there. Zhi Rong has just committed suicide and instead
of dying his soul is transferred into a Thai man's
body, a man called Asanee. He quickly adjusts to his
new life but soon starts seeing ghosts everywhere
around him. It's certainly not a great plot but it's
decent enough, it's everything else that works against
The Fatality. The script has some serious flaws, there
are no good scares, there's no atmosphere to be found
in here and the acting is pretty bad. In fact, had it
not been for the decent premise, this would've been
another Right Beyond disaster.

Let's start with the positives though. The production
values are decent and the cinematography is pretty
good. It certainly looks on-par with other Thai horror
movies and that's not something that you can always
take for granted with Right Beyond's productions. The
movie keeps a solid pace through and through and it
never really slows down. However, that's where the
positive stuff ends. Like I said before, there's nothing
even remotely scary about The Fatality. It didn't even
seem as if they tried to make it scary. The ghosts
always appear right when you expect them to and they
don't seem to be very angry either. They're just there.

We also have the fact that Zhi Rong adapts almost a
little bit too well to his new body. I mean, after only
a few weeks he speaks Thai fluently. His reactions
feel far-fetched and it feels as if the characters
do stupid things just to keep the story going at times.
The movie is also ridiculously predictable and like
I said before, there's nothing very fresh about it.
Ultimately, The Fatality is indeed a bad movie, I just
expected it to be worse. If you go in with really low
expectations you may come out somewhat pleased with
the result but I doubt anyone will watch this more
than once. It's a standard ghost story and not a very
good one at that.

No.

Depressing piano music doesn't exactly help lifting
an all ready stale atmosphere.

A Thai ghost story with little suspense to be found in
it. The basic premise is okay and it certainly has some
potential but the movie doesn't quite live up to it
and becomes rather generic and predictable. Don't
expect to get scared if you're going to watch this.
