Ji-yeon works as a tollgate ticket girl and tonight
she's got the night shift. All of a sudden all the
lights go out and a mysterious black car drives up
to her booth. Classical music can be heard from inside
the car and a female hand reaches out and gives Ji-yeon
the ticket. When the car has driven away, Ji-yeon
notices that the ticket is stained with blood.
Apparently, it is said that on every fourth year on
February 29th, a murder occurs near the tollgate.
Could Ji-yeon be the next victim?

With the ghost movie trend dying rapidly, South Korea
is doing everything in their power to keep the genre
popular. And if there's one Asian country that can
bring back the excitement into Asian ghost movies,
it's them. February 29 is a well-crafted and extremely
creepy horror movie, and even though it borrows elements
from various other horror movies, it manages to remain
surprisingly original.

February 29 revolves around a tollgate ticket girl
called Ji-yeon who one night receives a bloodstained
ticket from a creepy customer in a black car. She
tells her friend about what happened and finds out
that a terrible car-accident occurred near the tollgate
station 12 years ago. Her friend also tells her that
on the 29th of February every fourth year, someone has
been found brutally murdered near the station - and
it's been four years since the last time.

It's been a long time since a horror movie made me jump
as many times as this did, and I absolutely love it.
This is the reason why Asian horror became big in the
first place and I've missed the loud-noise scares,
they just don't work very well in American-made movies
for some reason. But February 29 isn't just packed with
scares, it's also got some really suspenseful scenes.
For example, when Ji-yeon hides on the floor inside the
dark tollbooth and suddenly hears the classical music
outside, that is a scene that will stick with me for a
long time. It really sent shivers down my spine.

This movie was a very welcome addition in the Asian
horror movie collection. If you're looking for something
a little bit more original than most Asian-produced
horror movies are these days, February 29 might be the
one you've been waiting for. Sure, the creepy ghost
girl is there but that seems to be inevitable these
days. This movie might not go to the history but it's
one of the best Asian horror movies of 2006 and it will
definitely make you jump more than once.

A quick shot of some mutilated bodies.

I love classical music in horror movies but I actually
wish that it would have been more powerful, at least
in one scene. It just wasn't dramatic enough for me.

February 29 is one of the scariest horror movies you'll
see this year. It's got a great and fairly original
plot and it's got a solid pace. If you're a fan of
Asian horror this is definitely a movie that you will
want to check out. I can't wait to see the rest of
the movies in this new horror movie series.
