Timmy and his
family have just gotten a zombie since
they were tired of being the only ones in the
neighbourhood that didn't have one. Timmy quickly
grows fond of the zombie and calls him Fido and it
doesn't take long before his mother takes a liking
to it as well. But being friends with a zombie is
very frowned upon and the neighbours soon start to
share their opinions. Will there be a happy ending
for Fido and his new-found family?

Since no one is taking zombie movies seriously
anymore, everyone seems to be taking a comedic
approach to the genre. Some are very successful at
that (Shaun Of The Dead) while others have been
less entertaining (Boy Meets Girl). Fido is Canada's
attempt to cross the zombie genre with comedy and
while it wants to be funny, and thinks that it's
funny, it's just not very funny.
Fido is set in the suburbs of 1950's where keeping
up appearances is the most important thing to a
family. After a horrible zombie war, zombies have
been trained to obey orders and are now used as
pets all over the country. Timmy's family is the
only family who doesn't have a zombie in the
neighbourhood and since the owner of the zombie
company just moved in next door, they feel that it's
about time to get one. Naturally things don't go
too well and their zombie ends up attacking a couple
of people, but still, the family can't help but to
grow very fond of the zombie that they've named Fido.
The premise here is decent, I won't say great because
it's not. It's like they've tried to continue where
Shaun Of The Dead left off and set it in the 1950's
for some reason. The movie is obviously meant to be
more of a comedy than a horror flick but I didn't
laugh once, not once! Hell, I didn't even get what
was supposed to be funny about it. A boy becomes
friends with a zombie - OH OH OH! HILARIOUS! Yeah,
I am being sarcastic. Furthermore, the movie has
some serious pacing problems and every now and then
it tends to drag. Perhaps I'm just more into British
humour than Canadian humour, I don't know.
It's not all bad though. Fido actually isn't a bad
movie, it's just not a very funny one. The characters
are well developed, there seems to have been a decent
amount of effort put into making the film and the
story (while slightly underwhelming) is well-written.
The only reason why I'm coming off so negative is
because this movie has gotten a lot of great reviews
and I just don't think that it deserves them. It's
an average zombie-comedy, but it's definitely nothing
that you will (and let me quite the tagline here)
laugh your head off at.
Overall, Fido is a watchable horror comedy and due to
its PG-13 rating, it's a quite tame one at that. The
jokes don't come across as funny and the horror just
isn't there. It's a feel-good movie, I'll give it
that, but don't go in with huge expectations because
you'll probably end up being slightly disappointed.
I know I was. An average zom-com but nothing that
you have to check out.

A decapitated head, nothing much, PG-13.

I think they went a bit overboard with the 1950's
concept. It seemed as if they tried too hard. You
can probably guess what kind of music can be found
in here based on those comments. It's competently
made, but it was simply too much.

Over hyped zombie comedy which doesn't offer a whole
lot new to the genre. It's a different approach,
sure, but not necessarily a very funny one. It has
gotten lots of great reviews though so I'm sure this
kind of humour appeals to some people (Canadians?),
but it just wasn't my cup of tea. For me, this was
average, nothing more, nothing less.
