A single
woman and her daughter move into a flat on
the 5th floor. They find it strange that there doesn't
appear to be a fourth floor, but don't spend much time
reflecting on it. Soon they start receiving complaints
from their downstairs neighbour who thinks that they're
too noisy, when in fact they're really quite silent.
What's really going on in their building and why isn't
there a fourth floor?

Forbidden floor is part of the Korean "4 Horror Tales"
series which is not an anthology like I thought, but
in fact a real franchise. What makes this different
from other franchises is that all of the movies were
released theatrically with only two-three weeks
between them. Since this is the first movie in this
series that I review I thought that you might want
to know that.
This is not a groundbreaking horror movie, it's just
like every other Asian ghost movie but mainly copies
things from Dark Water and A Tale Of Two Sisters.
Naturally, both those movies are far superior to this
movie, but Forbidden Floor isn't as dull as it sounds.
It might be extremely predictable and unoriginal, but
it's not dull. The story revolves around a single
woman and her daughter who move into a flat. It
doesn't take long before strange things start to
happen and the tenants start showing up dead. Could
it have something to do with the fact that there isn't
a fourth floor? And why is everyone so secretive about
the buildings past?
As you can hear this isn't exactly brand new material.
It's basically Dark Water all over again only with the
ghost from A Tale Of Two Sisters. What makes Forbidden
Floor so entertaining is the fact that it's filled
with scares, it's got some great actors and even though
most of the movie is really predictable, the ending
is brilliant (and surprisingly brutal for an Asian
ghost movie). Forbidden Floor is also, just like with
90% of all South Korean horror movies, very stylishly
shot. If there's one thing I've come to appreciate
with South Korean ghost movies, it's that no matter
how bad they are, they're almost always
a treat for the eye.
Even though this might not be the most original horror
movie ever, I still found it pretty entertaining. I mean,
considering the movies that it copies from, it should
be, right? It's got bunches of suspense and some pretty
good scares so I'm really looking forward to the next
part in this new horror series. Check this one out if
you loved "A Tale Of Two Sisters" as much as I did.

Some suggested gore, nothing graphical.

This could have been more powerful. The soundtrack is
pretty weak and quickly disappears in the background.
Quite disappointing really.

Forbidden Floor is just about as clichéd and unoriginal
as it could possibly get, and for you to be able to
enjoy this, I think you've got to be prepared to take
it for what it is. It's got some good scares and bunches
of suspense and while it's extremely forgettable, it's
definitely a good time-killer.
