People are turning up dead in the swamps of Louisiana.
It seems as if some creature, supposedly an alligator
is feasting on the locals but animal specialist Mary
refuses to believe that it's the work of an alligator.
The bite marks look more like the ones made of a shark
but how could sharks be in the swamps? That's not
very common. Well, Mary was right about one thing,
it's one hell of a big fish.

I know, I know, I am a sucker for these medium budget
creature flicks, especially when they look as good as
this one did. Frankenfish is the perfect Anaconda
spin-off! It's fun, it's entertaining and it's packed
with flesh-eating fish! I guess you kind of knew that
from the box-art though. I've always loved the idea
of having a horror movie made in the swamps and this
is the first REAL creature in the swamps film I've
seen since Anaconda (I know some people think that
both Anaconda and Frankenfish are unoriginal, but
are they really?). The movie is based on the same story
that "Snakehead Terror" was based on about when a
couple of Chinese Snakeheads got loose in America
though "Snakehead Terror" stuck more to the true story
than this did. However, this was clearly a lot better.
The movie is directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé who also
directed the '97 movie "Spawn" which I still haven't
seen actually. Well, you can tell that the movie was
originally made for the big screen (not for cable as
some people seem to think, I'm sure it would've
made about 15 million dollars or so. There's nothing
special about the directing really, nothing noticeable
but it still looks really good. The casting seems a bit
odd at first, Tory Kittles and China Chow just doesn't
feel like a good match here but after a while we
realize that the casting wasn't that dumb at all.
Muse Watson plays a fisherman (who would've guessed)
and as he's done this part before you can tell that
he's very suitable for the part. And all in all I'm
pretty satisfied with the performances in this movie.
Sci-Fi channel holds the rights for both this and
the less entertaining "Snakehead Terror" and just
like Snakehead Terror, I was surprised to see that
this was really gory. Is this a turn for the better?
Frankenfish has it all, decent CGI-effects (meaning
that they don't look 2D), lots of gore, a couple of
scares, a giant monster, a relatively hot cast and
lots and lots of action. If you're looking for a
flick that won't put you to sleep, check this out,
it's really entertaining and it was NOT made for TV!

This is gore-filled fun! A guy gets his arm bit off
by one of those lovely fishes, a gory bit off
alligators head is found and a guy gets his head
bit off, really messy and really good effects!
We also get a couple of gory corpses.

Eh. Same old, some vaguely atmospheric piano music
and you know, just the same old background music
that they use in every horror movie.

Frankenfish took me by surprise. I kind of had a
feeling that I was going to enjoy this new creature
feature but I never expect it to be as good as it
was. When I say good I mean that it keeps you
entertained for over an hour and never makes you
feel like turning it off (even the best of movies
can make you want to turn it off sometime). Check
it out, it's a good movie.
