Four friends are going to the carnival which just arrived in
town and after smoking a couple of joints, the friends are
feeling just fine. Since the carnival is about to close up
for the night and the friends are in no mood for going home yet,
they decide that it would be a good idea to stay the night
in the funhouse. Well, this might not have been such a good
idea after all since they're soon being hunted by a madman.

There were plenty of good (and bad) slasher flicks made back
in the 80s, but very few of them are timeless in a way. I don't
mean that they become bad with time but I mean that you can
really tell that they're from the 80s. The Funhouse is one of
those few rare slasher flicks that actually looks like it might
have been produced today. There is no real 80's feeling about
it at all, meaning no 80s pop or rock music, no funny haircuts
and scares that actually scare you. The story is, even if far
from original, very well-written and there is a very creepy
atmosphere during the entire flick.

Now, I've seen a bunch of horror flicks that take place at a
carnival but this is, as far as I can remember, the only one
which executes the idea in a good way. The directing is
slick and the acting is top-notch even if these actors never
made it big. We actually root for every single one of the
main characters even if they're not the cleverest people on
earth (what kind of place is a carnival to smoke a joint at
really?). The horror doesn't really begin until pretty far
into the movie but I think that's why we get to root for
the characters, we have time to get to know them without
ever getting bored (and that's something that many horror
flicks have problems with achieving).

The Funhouse is one of my favourite 80s slasher flicks even
if it doesn't really have any good gore in it. The scares
are good even if few and the movie has a very creepy
atmosphere which it profits a lot from. This is one slasher
flick that a slasher fan can't miss. It's got a cool
killer, a strong cast, a great atmosphere and a very
entertaining story. If you like horror movies that take
place in a carnival, this is definitely the one you should
be checking out!

Not a lot of gore, we get an axe in head and a non-gory
sword impalement.

Apart from the carnival music, the score is very eerie with
a big orchestra of violins, works brilliantly.

Highly entertaining slasher flick which looks as if it was
made just recently, in other words, not your typical 80s
slasher flick. It's got good production values and a strong
cast which you instantly root for so if you still haven't
seen this one, don't wait any longer!
