Detective Michael Turner is investigating a string of
mysterious suicides that have occurred in a big prison
recently. He soon finds out that an old closed-down
section of the prison was recently re-opened and it
seems as if everyone who's been in that area of the
building has died a horrific death. Could this be the
key to the mystery? If so, what really happened in that
area of the prison? And what mysteries are hidden in the
furnace room?

Samara gets put behind bars in this prison horror flick
(is it just me or haven't we seen a whole lot of
prison-themed horror movies recently?). William Butler
may love his horror flicks but as a writer and director
he still has a long way to go. A couple of years ago
his mediocre slasher flick "Madhouse" was released and
received mixed reviews. I saw a lot of potential in
Mr. Butler though and was really looking forward to
seeing his latest horror effort. Unfortunately, Furnace
is even less impressive than Madhouse and I'm no longer
sure of William Butler's potential. Sure, both Madhouse
and Furnace look technically competent and it seems as
if both movies had a decent budget, but that doesn't
make Furnace any less generic and underwhelming.

After an old section of a prison re-opens, an evil,
long-haired ghost girl is released to take out her
vengeance on the inmates and guards. Detective Michael
Turner is convinced that the recent string of mysterious
suicides is connected in some way but has no idea that
a little ghost girl is responsible for the deaths (he
obviously hasn't seen many horror flicks recently).
Naturally there's a twist as well - the ghost girl
this time was burnt alive inside a furnace (instead of
being drowned in a well) so instead of scaring people
with water, she scares people with fire and heat. Yeah,
I know, how clever huh? Not really. Furnace is so
by-the-numbers that you can literarily predict what
the next line of dialogue will be.

Many Ring rip-offs have at least had the decency to
scare the crap out of its audience but Furnace fails
miserably at this task. The ghost isn't scary and
appears in quick flashes that are resembling to the
ones we can find in recent Indonesian horror movies
(and that is NOT a good thing). There's not even a
moment of suspense to be found in here. It's an
utterly mediocre horror flick and I did not think that
it was clever to hire the girl who played Samara in
The Ring 2 for a part in this flick - that only made
it even more obvious that they were trying to rip off
recent ghost flicks if you ask me. Don't bother with
this generic horror flick, it's definitely not as
entertaining as the cover makes it out to be. It's
about as entertaining as painting furnace...

An open gory body, some fingers chopped off. Not much.

Meh, can't be bothered.

We've seen it so many times before that I've completely
lost track of how many Ring rip-offs there are out
there. Hell, there are probably more Ring rip-offs
than slasher flicks out there by now, and Furnace is
yet another mediocre one at that. If you're looking
for a scare, look elsewhere, Furnace is only good
enough to watch on cable if it comes on.
