A meteor shower
turns a bunch of homeless people into
zombies. Meanwhile, two gangs are doing some business
in an abandoned storage, unknowing that cops are
surrounding the area. To make things even worse, both
the cops and the gangs are soon attacked by the
ravenous zombies. Who will make it out alive?

As most of you know, I'm not a big fan of urban horror
flicks, but I have to say that Gangs Of The Dead took
me by surprise. This actually turned out to be a rather
well-crafted zombie movie - even though the title is
a bit misleading. See, the gangs aren't zombies, it's
actually a bunch of hobo's that get turned into zombies
and start attacking the two gangs. I really liked this
new approach for some reason, probably because it
seemed as if they had actually made an effort trying
to come up with a new twist on the zombie genre.
The story is surprisingly complex (and yes, I will be
using the word surprisingly a lot in this review
because that's the best word to describe this movie).
We have a lot of stuff going on in here, which causes
the movie to keep a good pace and stay interesting
through and through. First we have the two rival gangs
who meet up to do some business. Then we have the cops
surrounding the area. Then we have an unknown nark
in one of the two gangs (I actually didn't manage to
figure out who it was until they revealed it either).
And on top of that, we have a bunch of ravenous
zombies attacking just about everyone.
For once we get a horror flick which doesn't try to
be moral. In fact, the cops are the first ones to bite
the dust, and the few thugs that are actually likeable
die pretty quickly (in some surprise scenes which are
impossible to see coming). This all probably sounds
pretty confusing and way too complex for a zombie
movie, but the movie somehow manages to tie all of
this together neatly. In fact, there's not a moment
of confusion to be found in here.
Another big surprise was how professional the movie
looked and felt. This wasn't just some average urban
horror flick made in a week or so, this was competently
shot with slick directing and a surprisingly strong
cast. Hell, it even looked technically better than
Hood of Horror which had a pretty decent budget attached
to it. Ultimately I have to say that this is one of
the best urban horror flicks to date, it even beats
Hood of Horror so if you're into these thug horror
flicks, I strongly recommend that you check this one
out. And even if you're not, I think this might be
worth a watch. It's surprisingly entertaining.

Not that much gore, we get an arm torn off, a jaw
ripped open, and some blood splatter.

The beats are pretty good and work well together with
the concept of the movie.

Maybe I'm going soft but this zombie flick really wasn't
all that bad. In fact, it was actually pretty good.
There wasn't a single moment of boredom and it took
some unexpected turns which were highly appreciated.
With a good pace and a solid storyline, this is one
of the best urban horror flicks that I've seen to this
date (that's not saying much though).
