A female research team heads out into the forest
to uncover the truth about a mysterious tape.
They find the exact locations of where the tape
was recorded and it seems as if this is going to
be a very successful expedition. Unfortunately,
a masked killer is lurking around in the woods
and it doesn't take long before the girls start
to disappear one by one.

Goruzuka describes itself as a new kind of
horror movie, and while I wouldn't go that far,
I still have to agree to a certain extent that
it's nothing that we've really seen before. With
a fading common interest in Japanese horror
movies, one director decided that it was time
to do something different that didn't completely
copy movies like "The Ring" and "Ju-On". Sure,
Goruzuka has its fair share of Ring vibes in it
with a mysterious videotape and all but I'm
really appreciative that it didn't have a creepy
ghost girl as a villain. Instead, we have a
masked killer roaming around the woods, killing
teenage girls in true Friday The 13th style
with a rusty old meat-cleaver.

Unfortunately the killer plays a minor part in
the movie and it took me quite some time to
figure out that it was in fact a slasher movie.
Another negative thing about this flick is that
while the body count is quite high, I really wish
that we would have gotten more gore than we did
because we never really get to see the killer
in action with his meat-cleaver.

On a more positive note, the directing is
brilliant and it's obvious that this had a
quite solid budget attached to it. The acting
is surprisingly good and you can never go
wrong with an all-female cast. Another great
thing about this movie is that even though it's
a slasher, we still get a couple of good scares
which isn't too common in slashers these days.

Ultimately I didn't think that Goruzuka lived up
to its potential. It could have been so much
more than it ended up being. Still, this is
definitely worth checking out and I hope that
we will get to see more Japanese slashers in the
future as the Asians really know how to make
them. If you're sick of Ringu rip-offs, this
might just be able to give you back the interest
in Japanese horror flicks.

It's obvious that the movie would have benefited
from more gore but at least we get a slit throat,
a meat cleaver in ones head and a rusty nail in
ones chest. Should've been gorier though.

I loved the score! It basically just consists
of gong gong's and loud crashes but it works
brilliantly to create the right atmosphere.

Goruzuka is something which is very rare in
the Japanese horror genre these days, it's a
high-budget slasher flick with a masked killer.
It has a couple serious flaws and problems but
I'd still have to say that this is worth
checking out since it does manage to entertain.
