It's
summer, it's hot and a couple of friends decide
to head out with a boat which one of them recently
inherited. At first everything seems fine, but they
soon find themselves stranded in the middle of the
ocean. They try to make the best out of the situation
but it's not easy when the boat that they're on
appears to be haunted.

A full length movie taking place on a small boat,
could this really be good? Believe it or not, it
actually was - to a certain extent that is. Haunted
Boat is a low budget independent horror movie about
a couple of teens who get stranded in the middle of
the ocean on a haunted boat, and while I like the
idea of a ghost boat, it's not quite as spectacular
as a ghost ship so my expectations weren't really
high when I started watching this. Surprisingly,
I found myself really enjoying it.
Haunted Boat is a well-crafted ghost story with a
bucket full of suspense and a couple of really good
scares (even if the scares aren't exactly original).
The haunting begins after the friends tell each other
their worst fears and soon enough the friends start
turning up dead, one after the other. It seems as if
the previous owner of the boat wants them all dead
(he's a ghost by the way if you didn't get that).
There were some minor flaws in the plot which were
quite easy to overcome though. For instance, we never
really get to know why the ghosts want them dead,
We never see how 3 of the teens die (though it's
pretty obvious how one of them died) and the biggest
flaw of all was probably the acting which was abysmal.
If you can overlook these small factors however,
you're in for one hell of a ride.
It's not often that indie horror movies scare the
hell out of me but I was freaked out more than once
during this movie. It's got a pretty solid build-up
and there isn't a moment of boredom to be found in
here. I didn't really understand why the teens kept
telling each other ghost stories in the most inappropriate
situations though, but I guess it was a good way to
build some more suspense or even just fill out running
time. Either way, most of the short stories were
pretty effective so I didn't really mind them.
Over-all, Haunted Boat is still a pretty forgettable
movie. It's a bunch of good ideas, which we've seen
before, thrown together into one movie. It works well
enough to be satisfying but I'm sure not everyone
will enjoy this as much as I did. It's obvious that
the people in front of and behind the camera were
quite inexperienced but I hope to see something more
from them in the future as there aren't a lot of
good, creepy indie horror flicks to be found out there
these days. At least they all went in full-heartedly.

A girl throws up some worms, that's the goriest thing
in here though. It's a ghost story remember?

This was probably the worst part about this movie and
the main reason for why it didn't get a higher rating
from me. It seems as if two bands were hired to do
the score for Haunted Boat. First we have some skate
punk-music which really felt cheap and then we have
some strange semi-pop music which was even worse. The
suspense score was pretty decent though but I hated
the classical music which just didn't seem to fit in.

Haunted Boat is a decent ghost movie with a lot of
suspense and a couple of good scares but it lacks
in too many departments and ends up being a very
forgettable ride. Worth checking out if you enjoy
ghost stories though and I'm sure that the next
movie we see from these guys will be much better.
