Greg is a successful photographer who's currently
having an affair with one of his models. Apparently
he hasn't been very discrete since his wife knows
all about it. They get into a "big" fight which ends
up with Greg accidentally killing her. He decides to
dump her in the lake where they got married, but
what he doesn't know is that the drive there, is
going to be one hell of a ride.

With Japanese-inspired horror movies being the latest
trend in the American movie market, it was only a
matter of time before independent companies would
start exploiting this subgenre as well. Haunted
Highway, previously known as Death Ride, is the
result of an attempt to make an English language,
Japanese horror movie, with an all-American cast.
Unfortunately, the result is anything but impressive.

This cheap DTV horror flick revolves around Greg,
played by Rand Gamble, a sleazy photographer who's
cheating on his wife with a Japanese model. After
a big fight he ends up killing his wife and decides
to drive her to the lake where they got married,
but the road is filled with ghostly visions. Are
the ghosts of his dead wife real or is his guilt
playing tricks on him? That's the one question that
this movie relies on, and I think the answer is
pretty damn obvious so there's really not a whole
lot to grab onto here.

We get to spend about an hour watching this really
unlikeable person sit behind his wheel, slowly
growing insane. And when I mean slowly, I mean
that he basically goes insane the exact moment that
he steps into the car. His eyes turn red and the
make-up team haven't held back on the shoe-polish
below his eyes. It seems like they've smeared on an
extra layer every time he gets back into the car
(yeah, he gets in and out of the car a lot, it's
a wonder that he even reached his destination).

Yes, Haunted Highway really is 80 minutes of padding.
There's very little story in here. But I do have to
give these guys some credit since, in some way,
they've actually managed to create a good atmosphere
in the movie which keeps you mildly interested. And
for that reason, it's a watchable movie. It's still
not a good one though so you should definitely avoid it.

Nothing worth mentioning here.

The piano music was decent but I felt like a couple
of sound effects couldn't have hurt.

Haunted Highway has a ridiculously thin plot and is
overall just a very bad movie. Still, I wasn't
miserable while watching it and it was pretty easy
to get through for some strange reason. I'm not
saying that it's a good movie though because it is
definitely a movie you should leave on the video shelf.
