A
couple of friends are on their way back from a rave in the desert
when they decide to take an offside road in hope of finding an abandoned
weed plantation. When they get it an accident and the van gets stuck,
some of the friends split up in hope of finding help while some stay
by the van. Unfortunately for them, they seem to have unknowingly
trespassed private area and they are about to have a very unpleasant
meeting with some hillbilly cannibals.

When the title Hell's Highway popped up on the screen I was almost
certain that I was in for a lowbudget Dead Alive production. Too
my surprise I had gotten the story mixed up with an earlier movie
with the same title. Lucky me, I wasn't very positive when I saw
this at all because of the story and cheese factor, but instead I
got a very slick horrormovie which seemed very similar to the recent
horrormovie "Wrong Turn". The movie is really quite bad for like
20
minutes but then it kicks off and oh my god what a ride, this is
like a modern take on The Hills Have Eyes and I love retro horror.
There are plenty of jumps in here for everyone and the gore, well,
let's just say that fans of the Guinea Pig series would still be
grossed out... well almost anyway.
The acting is pretty stiff and the dialogues feel forced during the
first 25-30min or so but when the actors start loosening up a little,
they are excellent. Well, that's the case for everyone except for Aaron
Buer who overplays his part as an Eminem-wannabe. The directing is
simply excellent and very comparable aswell to Hooper's The Hills
Have Eyes, in some scenes it almost feels as if it's the same movie.
Hell's Highway took me by surprise and this was definitely one of the
best independent horrormovies I've seen in the new millennium. Though,
there's not much competition anymore with independent horrormovies
like Camp Blood and Cheerleader Massacre out there. I hope that the
company who made this film stays with having just one film and not
trying to make a sequel, cause I'm telling you, it would never work.
I think that this is one of those movies that could have been huge
at the box-office if it only got a chance, come on big distributors,
pick some of these lowbudget movies up, some of them are really
quite extraordinary á la Cube.

I
won't even go into detail here really, there's just so much gore
that it would take a whole page to write it all down. I can however
mention that there is a very cool dismembered arm scene and another
very cool head dismembering scene, then there's ofcourse a lot of
impalements in here aswell.

There's
a huge variation in the soundtrack, we get a lot of techno
drums and dance beats but we also get some rock music and some wind
to spice up the atmosphere.

A
surprisingly good movie that I strongly recommend if you are a
sucker for those 70's hillbilly horrormovies. If the cast wouldn't
have looked so hip I would probably have thought that it was from
the 70's or early 80's. Extremely good movie. Especially for gore-
hounds like myself.
