A couple of drama students steal the dead body
of a horror movie star to say one last goodbye
to him. Unfortunately, this alleged goodbye turns
into a party and they end up dancing and making
out with the corpse. The spirit of the dead horror
star does not like this very much and soon the
students begin to drop dead one by one.

Mixing a cheesy 30s horror movie with an early
80s slasher flick might seem like a good idea
but apparently, it's not. The Horror Star, more
commonly known as Frightmare, revolves around a
group of drama students who show up dead one by
one after having stolen a corpse of a movie
star. It's definitely not your typical,
by-the-numbers slasher flick and I do give it
some credit for that, but ultimately, I kind of
wished that it were.

You see, the students are, in most cases, not
killed directly by the reanimated corpse of the
horror star. Instead, we get to see a shot were
this horror star rubs his forehead which manifests
everything from fatal smoke to flying coffins.
As you can hear, the entire plot is pretty
ludicrous. I mean, no normal person would ever
kiss a corpse and look as though they enjoy it.

The Horror Star isn't all bad though, it does
have a few things going for it. First of all,
there's the pacing. Since the movie is only 82
minutes long, there is no time for introducing
us to the characters, instead, the students
basically show up just in time to start dying.
It feels like a bit of a shame to underutilize
a talent like Jeffrey Combs but he does the best
he can with the little dialogue that he has.

While The Horror Star isn't quite as forgettable
as many other 80s slasher flicks, I'm not sure
that you will remember it for all the right
reasons. It's a mildly entertaining movie, I'll
give it that but the concept is just too silly
and ludicrous for my taste.

There's very little gore in here but we do get
a pretty decent decapitation and a far from
impressive impalement.

Soundtrack? Huh? What? Could it have been any
paler? Very weak score to say the least.

Even if The Horror Star is a fairly original
movie, it doesn't make it a good movie. The
concept is pretty silly and the characters never
really get any kind of introduction. Either way,
it is pretty amusing while you watch it but it's
not a movie that you will want to watch again.
