Ju-Rei tells the story of a couple of high school
girls who get to know the truth behind an urban legend
about a ghost. The ghost seems evil and supposedly
kills everyone he/she can get her/his hands on. Will
the friends survive the urban legend or will they
become part of it?

Ju-Rei feels like a low budget remake of the TV-movie
Ju-On and the TV-movie Ju-On was already very low
budget. Everything seems the same except for a couple
of changes. We still have the weird noise that the
ghosts make, that seems almost identical to the sound
used in Ju-On and we still have the chronologically
flawed story. Ju-Rei starts out with "Chapter 10" and
then we get to see how various people die until
Chapter 1 of the movie which is very confusing. See,
while it made sense in Ju-On, it barely makes any
sense at all here. Some people doesn't seem connected
to the story at all actually and it's also confusing
to have to see a movie backwards and I honestly have
no idea why anyone would want to build a movie like this.
Director Koji Shiarishi makes a big mistake by trying
to build this movie in an artistic way because it's
confusing and honestly, very uninteresting. The characters
are shallow and to be honest with you, they seem
pretty stupid. I mean, would you send your friend
away if you started seeing ghosts and instead of
seeking comfort from your friend you hide under
the quilt? It just doesn't make any sense. I feel
sorry for the girl who had to sit under a quilt
for about five minutes trying desperately to look
scared. Obviously the connection between the director
and the actors can't have been very good or else
I'm sure that someone from the cast would have
pointed out that this is not how you handle this
kind of a situation. Or maybe the script was just
too flawed.
Ju-Rei isn't all that bad though, it does have its
moments. Even if the story is simple and unoriginal,
the movie still delivers a couple of jumps and
scares. It's still a whole lot better than many
other Asian horror movies I've seen lately and
honestly, I expected it to be worse than what it
was. If you haven't gotten enough Ju-On yet,
check this out, it might not be as good but it's
still pretty much the same concept and it does
deliver the scares.

We get chopped off hands, a lawnmower massacre
which is very brutal and a few severed heads...
nah, just kidding, it's got no gore in it at all.

The soundtrack basically consists of different
sounds put together. Not a lot of music (which
I really felt that the movie could've used in
some scenes to create more suspense).

If you're, like me, a big fan of the Ju-On movies,
perhaps you should check this one out. It basically
uses the same concept and the same kind of scares
but in the end, this is far from as clever as any
of the Ju-On movies and also it looks a whole lot
cheaper than all of them.
