A couple of hybrid locusts escape from a laboratory and
start to breed like hell. Soon, California is taken
over by a swarm of angry locusts and there seems to be
no stopping them. Dr. Maddy Rierdon decides to give it
a try anyway and starts coming up with a plan. But will
she be able to kill these horrible insects before they
start bugging the hell out of people?

CBS TV seems to try to be the new Sci-Fi channel with
numerous sci-fi TV-series and creature features with
titles like "Locusts", "Spring Break Shark Attack" and
"Vampire Bats". Since I had never seen a CBS horror
flick before, I decided that it was time to see what
they had to offer. Unfortunately, this movie turned out
to be more of an action drama than a horror movie. The
story is very basic with hybrid locusts trying to take
over the world. Well, that sounds like any other horrible
creature feature right? Well, it's not. While the story
is surprisingly interesting and entertaining, the locusts
don't actually kill anyone.
Warrior princess Lucy Lawless is pretty good in this one
actually. She manages to make us forget that she once
played Xena: The Warrior Princess so well that we can
actually consider her as a serious actress. The rest of
the acting is also pretty good with a couple of
recognizable faces. The directing is very average for
these kind of films though and fails to impress. But
since this is in fact a TV-movie, I had actually expected
a whole lot worse.
Locusts might be a relatively entertaining TV-movie but
let's face it, as a DTV feature, this would fail miserably
so I hope that this never sees the light of a DVD release.
Creature feature fans will be disappointed to see that
there are no actual kills in the movie. While the few
special effects that we get are good, it's just not enough.
With a couple of kills, this would probably have been a
much better movie, but in the end, this just feels like
a mediocre action drama.

Nothing at all.

I have no comments on the soundtrack as it's definitely
nothing out of the ordinary.

Mildly entertaining TV-movie which fails as a horror flick
due to the fact that the locusts never actually kill
anyone, at least not on purpose. If there's nothing better
on TV, you might want to check it out but this is
definitely not something that you will want to rent if
it ever gets released on DVD.
