It's the final night for the season at a summer camp,
and all of the counsellors and children have gathered
around the campfire to tell ghost stories. The old
man who runs the camp tells the story of Madman Marz,
a deranged man who killed his family with an axe,
not far away from the camp. Naturally one of the kids
make fun of the story, but what no one realizes is
that the legend is real, and that Madman Marz is still
lurking around in the woods by the camp...

Say what you will, but I think that Madman is one of
the best backwoods/camp slasher flicks that were
made back in the 80's. It's got a big, bad villain
with a huge axe, it's got a semi attractive cast
and it's got a decent amount of gore. Most surprisingly
however is the cinematography. While most slashers
from this era were pretty low-budget, Madman looks
incredibly good. The use of dark blue colours works
great and really manages to create a good atmosphere.

What I love the most about Madman however has to be
the directing. The cheesy shots of an axe looking over
people's shoulders are brilliant and I think Madman was
one of the first slasher flicks to do this (sadly it
didn't work quite as well in Head Cheerleader Dead
Cheerleader). And even though it's pretty obvious
who's going to die and who's not, this movie tends
to drag out on it to keep the suspense level high,
and it really does work.

So it probably seems like I'm in love with this slasher
flick by now and while it is a guilty pleasure of mine,
I can't say that it's a flawless movie. The story is
quite unoriginal, that's a fact, any schmoe could have
come up with the concept really. The acting isn't
very good either, in fact it's pretty bad for most
of the time. And let's face it, the gore effects
look pretty cheap (can anyone say ketchup?).

Madman might not be the most clever of slashers or
the most creative, but it's a pure popcorn movie
which you can watch over and over again... well, at
least I can. It's got a good pace and before you
know it, you're watching the end credits roll by.
So if you're a fan of backwoods slasher flicks,
give Madman a chance.

We get a slashed throat and a bunch decapitated
bodies as well as some blood splatter.

Many people have complained over the soundtrack for
this movie but I actually kind of like the theme song,
let's face it; it's catchy. The suspense music also
works and creates a great atmosphere.

Madman is a very underrated slasher flicks which
deserves more credit than it has been given. I'm
not sure why some people dislike this movie because
I think it's one of the best backwoods slashers out
there. It's got a great pace and a kick-ass villain.
If I were you, I'd buy this one right away.
