"A must for all big slasher fans"

Ten years ago, a serial killer guised as a miner went
on a killing rampage in the small town of Valentine's
Bluff. Now he's returned to finish what he once started,
and he is more furious than ever before.

What you see is what you get. That's really the case
with My Bloody Valentine. This is a pure slasher movie.
It doesn't try to be smart or original, it just wants
to scare the hell out of you and gross you out in as
many ways as possible. I wasn't fortunate enough to
get to see this in 3D but in all honesty, I'm kind of
happy that I didn't - at least from a journalistic
standpoint as I think that gimmicks like 3D often
make you believe that the movie is better than it
actually is. I'm sure that this is also the case with
My Bloody Valentine because had this been in 2D, it
would have probably ended up going straight to DVD.
As a slasher fan however, I'm really upset that the
cinema that I went to only showed it in 2D. Nevertheless,
I'm here to review the movie and not the 3D effects
so it doesn't really matter.

My Bloody Valentine is one of the most honourable remakes
that I've ever had the pleasure of sitting through.
This doesn't ridicule the original movie or try to make
it something that it's not. It's simply an update - and
a good one at that. I would've never thought that a
Canadian slasher flick that didn't even receive a lot
of attention back when it was first released would get
a remake - but for once I'm actually happy that it did.
My Bloody Valentine throws us back to the 80's when
slasher flicks were all about the entertainment value
and it really feels as if 2009 could be the year to
bring the slasher era back to us. I mean, the slasher
waves usually come every 10 years or so and it's been
more than 10 years since Scream was released so a new
slasher boom is due.

I have to say though, there were some aspects of the
movie that were not so great. Nothing about My Bloody
Valentine felt very expensive. The acting was so-so,
the script could've used a little more polishing, and
it almost stayed too true to the original. Let me
try to explain. The original My Bloody Valentine may
be a great cult flick but it's a bit flat and forgettable
since it is so extremely unoriginal. This is also the
case with the remake. No matter how much I love mindless
slasher flicks, it's just not comparable to movies
like the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Urban
Legends. It's so much cheesier. A couple of years ago,
My Bloody Valentine would probably have had to settle
with a 3/5 rating from me but at the same time, horror
movies these days are just so incredibly bad for most
of the time that we can't be too picky which is why
I'm cutting this more slack than I probably should.

Either way, My Bloody Valentine is bloody fun. It's
forgettable fun, but at least it's fun. There's lots of
gore, lots of great chase scenes and a lot of nudity.
It's got all the right slasher ingredients - and while
the standard burger at McDonalds always works, it's
nice to have a slice of cheese in there every now and
then just to mix things up - if you get what I'm saying.
If you're looking for a mindless and extremely gory
slasher movie, look no further, this is the perfect
movie. It's a perfect homage to 80s slasher flicks and
a very good remake.

I'm not even going to get into it, it's ridiculously
gory. I can't believe this passed with an R-rating.

Pretty standard stuff.

My Bloody Valentine is a very entertaining and gory
slasher flick but it's not a strong 4/5'er. It's
very campy and feels rather low-budget for a theatrical
slasher flick but it's still definitely a must for all
big slasher fans. The mainstream audiences may find it
a bit too "dumb" and generic though so it'll probably
be gone from cinemas quite fast once the 3D gimmick
has run its course.
