A small theatre
is having a midnight horror movie
showing of a film that hasn't been showed in
40 years. What they don't know is that they're
just about to become movie stars as the serial
killer has no plans of staying on the screen.
Soon enough they find themselves running for
their lives, but will anyone make it to the end
of this midnight screening?

I'm impressed. I had expected some low-budget DTV
slasher flick but Midnight Movie looks good
enough to get a wide theatrical release. Of course
it never will seeing as how it's rather bland
and generic but still, it's not everyday that
you come across a nice-looking slasher film these
days. Midnight Movie is a slasher flick in the
vein of Popcorn. In fact, it can almost be treated
as a sequel to Popcorn as the two movies have
more than one thing in common. Midnight Movie
actually feels like it is from the late 80's in
many ways and I'm sure that they wanted it to
look this way. However, it's not as great of an
homage as Hatchet was.
The movie takes place in an old movie theatre
where they're showing a horror movie late at
night that hasn't been screened for 40 years.
Why? Because according to the legend, the movie
is cursed and the actors in it were actually
killed. Well guess what? The killer from the
movie is about to change things up a little and
get a new hot cast as he kills off the audience
members one by one. It's a pretty standard concept
and it has been done before more than just in
Popcorn. The actors aren't great and I wasn't a
big fan of the killer either, or his weapon.
However, Midnight Movie is a lot of fun, it's a
mindless slasher flick with lots of gore, some
cool death scenes and you know, it's just
extremely entertaining. A popcorn flick to say
the least.
What impressed me the most however was the directorial
debut of Jack Messitt. This guy obviously knows
his stuff and gives us some brilliant angles and
makes the movie look on par with slasher flicks
like Valentine and Cherry Falls. Had you asked
me what the budget for this movie was I would
never have guessed one million dollars, I would
have answered 6-8 million dollars. Seriously,
you will not believe how professional this movie
looks and feels in every aspect. These guys
obviously knew what they were doing.
Despite its short-comings, Midnight Movie is a
gory and extremely entertaining slasher flick
that all slasher fans will definitely enjoy. Had
it only been a bit more creative this could have
been the slasher flick of the year. I have faith
in that Jack Messitt will continue to impress us
in the future and despite being rather bland at
times, Midnight Movie is certainly a slasher movie
worth checking out. The movie is all ready
available on DVD in Thailand so order yourself a
copy right away.

We get a slashed throat, a very cool impalement
and a lot of blood splatter. Good stuff.

Again, very impressive, fits the movie perfectly.

Midnight Movie isn't a great movie but as mindless
entertainment it really does work. This is a pure
popcorn flick that you can just kick back and
enjoy the hell out of so if you're in the mood
for a classic slasher movie, be sure to check out
Midnight Movie as soon as possible.
