After a major
thunderstorm has passed a small town in
Maine, people are stocking up with supplies in case
another storm hits. This also includes David Drayton
and his son. These people feared another thunderstorm,
but when a man covered in blood runs into the store in
panic saying that there's something in the mist,
everything changes. Afraid of finding out what's really
in the mist, the people barricade themselves in the
grocery store. But for how long can they keep whatever
is out there outside?

As I left the movie theatre I basically wanted to scream,
I was so angry, sad, upset, emotional, and at the same
time so happy with what I had just saw. The Mist evokes
every feeling out there and even though a part of me
really wanted to hate the ending of this movie, my
brain kept telling me just how genius it was. The Mist
may come off as a high-budget "The Fog" remake rip-off
in the trailers and ads, but it's not. In fact, it's
quite the contrary (even though I'm not sure what the
difference between a mist and a fog is, anyone care to
explain?). The Mist is not some teen ghost movie filled
with poor actors and campy special effects, it's a
sophisticated, apocalyptic creature feature which will
take you on the rollercoaster of a lifetime.
As usual, Stephen King has put a bunch of random people
with differing personalities in a horrifying situation
(oh and yes there is indeed a crazy religious person
in here like always). This time the story takes place
inside a large grocery store - a surprisingly large one
considering the size of the town. Everyone is stocking
up with food supplies in case another storm hits the
small community but when a mist rolls in and covers the
entire town, terror strikes. As the people inside the
building fear what's in the mist, panic starts to
spread and more and more people start to believe in a
crazy religious woman who claims that it's god's wrath
that awaits them outside (I love how no religious people
in King's movies are sane).
So what really is in the mist? Well I don't want to
tell you but you'll find out soon enough because if
you don't watch this movie you are a freaking moron.
Like I said before though, it's something creepy crawly
as it's a creature feature. Frank Darabont has directed
and written the screenplay for this movie and just like
with The Green Mile, Frank sure knows how to make a
King story shine. His directing is out of this world.
Really, simply flawless, I wouldn't have done anything
differently. The suspense is there and the movie moves
in such a fast pace that it makes two hours just fly
by. Unfortunately, the movie has one problem. One that
I had a hard time overcoming.
The movie is completely without scares. It's got the
suspense in the bag but the suspenseful scenes always
turn into nothing. They keep building up for something
big to happen, and while it always does, it's never
really a big surprise. I craved for a good scare and
I never got one. However, that's the only downside that
I could find with this movie. The cast is outstanding,
the characters are all interesting, the story is
extremely well-written (of course) and it's nice to
see that Mr. King is back in the game again. Hopefully
this will become just as big as "1408" as it's just
as good - if not better, but I don't think that it will
be simply because it's not mainstream enough. This is
a movie that will have horror fans go through the roof
but the mainstream audience probably won't appreciate
it as much as they will have a hard time seeing the
brilliance of it - at least that's what I think.
Ultimately, The Mist is a great horror flick and with
very few flaws. One of the best horror movies of the
year without a doubt. A top-notch horror thriller
indeed but will probably struggle to make back its
budget on the box-office, no matter how good the word
of mouth is since it's simply not mainstream enough.
If you're in the mood for a great and different
apocalyptic horror flick, this is the way to go.

A half a body, lots of blood splatter, a big hole in
ones back, etc. Not THAT gory, could have very well
been rated PG-13 if you ask me.

Terrific soundtrack which really serves the movie well.

The Mist is one of the most positive surprises of this
year for me. It's an extremely entertaining apocalyptic
horror thriller while it's also an emotional rollercoaster.
If you want a happy ending, you may not want to see
this film but if you're looking for an outstanding
horror flick, you've got to check this one out.
